My goal of working within the teaching profession was not a lifelong held ambition. I came to the realisation that I wanted to be a teacher, specifically at the primary stage after my decision to return to education as a mature student to create a better future for myself after overcoming personal difficulties to do so. The idea of instilling a lifelong love for learning in young children and helping them to value education and view it as a priceless gift, along with the rewarding nature of teaching and my classroom experience inspired my choice to become a primary school teacher. Being mentored by the teachers and having the opportunity to have first-hand insight in to the profession has been priceless, they allayed all my fears and their dedication motivates me to work harder to achieve my dream of being a teacher. I also work as a clinic receptionist and the skills I have gained from my time there will be useful when teaching. Being on the front desk and communicating with people from all walks of life has made me confident and self-assured and having to balance conflicting demands and impatient patients ensures that I now keep calm under pressure and do not feel flustered in stressful situations. I have frequently had to make anxious children feel at ease and I feel this is a skill which can be translated into classroom practice with nervous pupils. In my free time I love to read African poetry such as the works of Warsan Shire, a Somali poet whose poems on displacement, unsettlement and making homes in foreign places resonate in my soul. As well as the Somali classic Hadraawi whose wise words are a soothing familiar balm for me in hard times. I have recently also started playing badminton which is something I have grown to love. This helps me to become a healthier, fitter person and has also improved my team-working
