If you have a strong respect for our society and you want to see its progress, what could be a better way of serving the country than becoming a teacher? There are many reasons that make this profession an amazing job and it is frustrating to see that is not as appreciated as it should be.
I was always surrounded by fantastic teachers at school and also at home. Yes, my parents are teachers and in many occasions I would hear stories about their students, their success and their struggle as well. I can truly say this inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. New teachers tend to struggle more in classroom management compared to ones with years of experience. Dealing with behavior issues I can imagine is overwhelming at times, scared of not knowing what to do or how to handle the issues calmly. In my co-op placement at middle school, some teachers confessed that university didn’t prepare them well enough to deal with classroom problems. “A bigger bag of classroom management tricks would have been helpful” (Win, 2012). Teachers also dedicate endless hours preparing for original and creative lesson plans to make sure all students can comprehend new concepts using a variety of teaching methods. In a nationwide survey of over 8,000 teachers, nearly half said they receive few classroom resources with very few instructional resources, i.e. lesson plans (Win, 2012). Another big part of their time is spent grading students’ work or coaching extra curriculum activities with no extra pay, unlike many hourly paid jobs. "Overpaid and under-worked" teachers, according to the Heritage Foundation, do not exist. The teacher salary is determined by the level of certified education and experience in the field. With a Bachelor’s degree and teaching license you are eligible to teach and receive a basic salary, but having Master degrees will guarantee a higher starting salary. As a Canadian teacher, you and your family are entitled to dental and extended health insurance, life insurance, drug benefits, vision care, etc. Furthermore, you can make more money if you take extra responsibilities as curriculum leader, head of department or principal. Some teachers choose to teach night or summer courses, or tutor students privately, which can bring in more money.
