Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Being around children gave me joy and excitement. Going on internships to schools showed me how much I would like to be a teacher. I learned through all of the experiences I have had teaching, I would like to teach, inspire and help students grow. That is why I would like to join the elementary education program at UNLV.
I believe that each and every child is unique in their own way. Who needs a secure and caring environment in which they can grow and mature emotionally, cognitively, physically, and socially. That’s why for me it’s important to help the students meet their full potential in this areas by providing an environment that is safe and also a place where they are able to share their ideas with each other and to let them explore their curiosity because after all that’s how they learn. Teaching was not something I originally thought of when I started school, but when I got accepted here I realized that I could be the Mrs. DeWeese to another child and be able to influence them the same way that I was. Ever since I was little, in sixth grade, I’ve known that I wanted to make some kind of impact on the world. I’ve known that I wanted people to know me, to love me and to remember me. I wanted to make such an impact on someone’s lives that they told strangers or even their kids about me. I realized this goal when I met one of the most influential men in my life, and no, before you assume things, it is not my father, although he does inspire me in many other ways. My sixth grade math teacher, Mr. Brewer, was and still is one of the goofiest people you could ever meet.

Every fall, a new group of students eagerly await the first day of school. They are excited to see their friends, classrooms, and of course to learn from their new teachers. I cannot wait to become the best possible teacher for my future students. At Emporia State University, I will be able to engage with other future educators and develop into the teacher I desire to be. Just as the students at the beginning of the school year are enthusiastic to begin a new journey, I am equally ready to begin this new chapter of my life.
Why I Chose to be an Educator There is nothing more sad than unused potential. I firmly believe that every human being in the world has something positive to add, some just never get to share it. I chose to become a teacher to help each child unlock their potential, to light a flame in them for learning, and to leave some legacy no matter how small that I cared and tried to make the world better than I found it. As a thirty- eight-year-old mother, grandmother, and wife, it is never too late to dream, start over, or to stretch your hand out to help. Children come with different personalities, some that never stop talking and some that barely speak at all.

I began going to USF in hopes to find my path in life and see where I would go and what interested me the most. After completing the Mastery Self-Assessment, my score placed me in the range of Master Teacher. As a Master Teacher, I have developed a variety of instructional strategies, classroom management approaches, and other teaching techniques that have assisted me in my classroom. The top five teaching strategies that are important to me as a Master Teacher are using “reinforcers”, making connections with my students, communicating with the students, parents, guardians, and case managers, never stop learning, and stop and listen to your student’s understanding of the material you present. One classroom management practice, I employ is the use of “Reinforcers.”
For as long as I can remember, working with children is all I have ever wanted to do. Through my own personal experience, I have seen how a teacher can either positively or negatively affect a child’s life. I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I could remember. As a child, I would play school with my neighborhood friends. It was fun. It was exciting. It is thrilling to have someone understand what you are trying to show them.
I have always wanted to be a teacher. My motto is to change to world one child at a time. I want to let the children know that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. I after my decision not to complete student teaching at Austin Peay, I thought that teaching was out of the question. I settled to teach at the daycare; I was employed there for the past 12 years.
I am pursing a degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I am passionate about education and excited to share the joy of learning with students. The perspective of wonder and sense of excitement that children bring into education motivates me daily. While many professions can be impactful, I believe the qualities of the person in the career position to be the most influential.
Growing up in a house with a mom who is an educator showed me the importance of education and spreading the love I have for teaching others and helping them grow as a learner. I grew up surrounded by classrooms from a young age. I would hang out in my mom’s room in the morning and after school while she worked. I loved going to school and never wanted to miss a day for any reason. I loved school because of the teachers and staff I had and I would love to be the reason kids love coming to school as well.
