Ever since the age of eleven, I’ve been working with and teaching young kids. Starting four years ago, I helped out with some dance classes at the dance studio I danced at. Even though I wasn’t the primary instructor in the room then, I still got to demonstrate skills and interact and bond with the young children. I loved it so much that I found myself helping out with classes every year after that. Now, since I am a little older, my job is to teach dance classes of my own and I love every part of it. Goemaat. I had many different questions to ask her about her job and what it is like. This is Mrs. Goemaat’s fourth year of being a teacher. Mrs. Goemaat not only teaches high school English, but is also the fifth grade Talented and Gifted instructor. Shawna went to William Penn for two years to get her teaching degree. She spent her first year out of college being a substitute teacher at North Mahaska. After that first year went by, she was offered the fifth grade T.A.G. teacher position along with a few high school English classes. So, Mrs. Goemaat went back to school for a semester at the University of Iowa to get her T.A.G. endorsement. Usually getting a teaching job isn’t that easy, but teachers will always be in demand. When Mrs. Goemaat started her first year of teaching, she was being paid approximately $32,000, with having her insurance fully paid. Other than teaching her students, being a teacher has some other duties. At North Mahaska, Mrs. Goemaat is occasionally assigned to lunch and hall duty. She is also required to attend weekly professional development meetings and discuss with the other English teachers to make sure they are teaching the correct criteria and focus on how they can better student
