A large group of students in the United States makeup a large population of English language learners. Students who are considered English language learners undergo many challenges in their education, and without the necessary support and resources from their educators it can make it hard for them to succeed. A teacher plays a significant role in the success of a child, and it is crucial for them to be able to provide the proper education to students whose first language is not English. It is also very important for teachers to understand the challenges that these students are facing. Having empathy towards the students allows for the teacher to create better connections and relationships to better help them.
I am currently teaching at Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas. Our student population is very diverse, including English Language Learners (ELLs). During this time as a teacher, I have served students with different language needs. It has been my goal to engage ELL students in my lessons as every other student. It is my opinion that as teachers we are all language teachers.
What do you currently teach and where? I am a December graduate of the University of Charleston. I graduated magna cum laude. After graduation I began substituting. I substituted at a variety of schools in Kanawha County in a variety of grades.
I am currently employed as a substitute teacher for the Richland School District, located in Shafter, CA. I have been a substitute teacher for about six months and it has been a great experience which is one reason why I want to continue my career and get my teaching credentials. I am interested in becoming a Physical Education teacher so I can make a difference in children’s lives. I am choosing to pursue teaching as a profession because I know I can leave a positive impact on children. Being around sports and physical fitness has given me the motivation and knowledge to teach children the importance of maintaining active and healthy.
Teaching is important to me because I feel that every child should have a place where they feel cared for and believed in. Since school is where most children spend the majority of their day, being a teacher is a perfect career to provide this safe place for them. I have had a passion for working with kids since my childhood and every year, that deepens as I watch more and more kids grow emotionally, as well as academically. I want to help students reach their potential in every aspect of their life while fostering their love of learning. With these motivations to become an educator, I have found myself resonating most with the Humanistic learning theory.
Bryce Williams EDUC 250 Jan. 29th, 2017 When I become a teacher, I find it that it is very beneficial to meet the needs of all of your students, While in a classroom I believe that I must always be willing to adapt to any of my students while making sure that I am doing the best that I possibly can to educate them. We as educators owe it to our students to help them keep learning and growing in order to offer many ways that they can be success. It is a personal feeling of mine to always want to see my students be the best that can be, Urie Bronfenbrenner states "Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her." Every fall, a new group of students eagerly await the first day of school. They are excited to see their friends, classrooms, and of course to learn from their new teachers. I cannot wait to become the best possible teacher for my future students. At Emporia State University, I will be able to engage with other future educators and develop into the teacher I desire to be. Just as the students at the beginning of the school year are enthusiastic to begin a new journey, I am equally ready to begin this new chapter of my life.
When a teacher gets his or her first classroom there are many things they will want to incorporate including book nooks, teacher workspace, student workspace, etc. However, it is not always easy for them to find space for everything they want with what they are given. Some obstacles include door placement, windows, and built-in furniture. Finding room for what a teacher wants in their classroom and incorporating what is given to them can be tricky but it is something all teachers have to do at least once in their career. There are also many important details that teachers must think about when designing their classroom such as accessibility, distractions, and whether or not the teacher can see all of the students all of the time.
As a future Biology teacher I hope to inspire my students to be curious about the world around them, to apply what they learn in and outside the classroom, and to continually challenge themselves to explore and learn more. This is why I have decided that when I start teaching I will maintain an interactive classroom. Furthermore, I believe that all teachers should teach through active experimentation; this can allow all the students to learn through their own experience. Also, the core curriculum use in schools should be academic rigorous so that all students can be challenged, however in their own level of capacity.
The reason why I am choosing a teaching profession is because I like working with kids and I feel like I have a calling on my life to teach kids. The first time I started working with kids in a classroom setting was my junior year of high school. I took a class called service learning. In that class, you chose to help a teacher in the elementary, intermediate or junior high. I choose to help a teacher in the elementary school.
My ambition of wanting to become and primary / junior teacher originates since I was a young girl. Personally, I have always had the desire to help people and to lead by example to encourage others to fulfill their lives to the fullest. I have always enjoyed working with children of all ages. I know that teaching involves helping shape young peoples way of learning to be successful with future schooling skills, knowledge and their life. I want to be a successful teacher and have the satisfactions of the reward from knowing I am making a difference for the student’s future.
These past few years, I’ve learned a lot when it come to teaching and learned some teaching strategies that I can use in the near future. I believe that knowledge should be shared to other people because this is one of the things that God gave us and this is one of the ways that I can help other people most especially children. Teaching is one of the hardest field that anyone can choose because it is one way to mold the children characters and talent. It may be hard but it is one of the most fulfilling when you know that you help your students to become better in the future.
There are many ways to teach students what they need to be learning in school. You can be one kind or a mixture of the types. There are five different types and they are; perennialism, progressivism, behaviorism, essentialism and social reconstructionism. My personal favorite way of teaching/learning is the progressivism way. I personally believe that children learn best when they are in an environment they feel safe in, relaxed, welcomed and a positive place.
Growing up I had great teachers who not only taught me, but also inspired me to want to be an amazing teacher just like them. The teacher who inspired me the most was my year 2 primary school teacher who taught me various subjects including English, Maths and Science. She also taught me valuable life lessons such as the benefits of helping and inspiring others. Even though my former teachers have played a pivotal part in my inspiration to teach, my main influence would have to be my youngest brother who was born when I was 10 years old. I spent a lot of time with him and was able help him to develop his skills.
For centuries, it has been a social norm for many to view the teaching profession as some kind of joke. There is a saying that makes every nerve in my body twitch: “Those who can’t do, teach.” It is saddening that many people in our society view teachers as individuals who are lesser than or simply unintelligent. Being an education major is certainly not a blow-off path to take, and becoming a successful teacher is undoubtedly not an easy feat. My hope is that society can begin to stray away from the idea that teaching is just a babysitting job that people who aren’t smart enough to hold any other position have to do.
