Teaching Philosophy Statement

Reflecting on my preceding experiences in education, I acknowledge the immense impact that teachers cause on the lives of their students. I recognize that the knowledge and skills collected in the classroom, will be utilized by students throughout life. As a teacher, I aspire to be a role model that resonates with young people. My goal is to maintain an open mind, the ability and knowledge to view the world critically, and the confidence in my capacity to make positive contributions to our society. Bearing this goal in mind, I am applying for admission into the Graduate School of Education in Elementary and Special Education program.

For example, I was an aide for a Pre-K teacher for 2 years. During that time period, I gained the skills to adequately manage a classroom, implement lessons, activities, and have compassion towards children on all cognitive levels. The head teacher encouraged my growth by requiring my participation in daily instruction. More recently, I have spent time volunteering as a tutor for middle school grade students. I enjoy gaining insight while working with students one on one, and offering my time to further their skills in subjects such as, math, English, history, and science. For the past two years, I have been assisting a young boy that has autism. He has been a leading source of inspiration and drive for me to continue my path to help more children that have not always been dealt the best hand. This young boy started off not only with difficulty socializing like most of us, but also with simple tasks like getting dressed and properly brushing his teeth. The journey has not been an easy one for him. Now, two years later, he stands proudly and better prepared for the world around him. Although his development has been only in small increments, I relish in his every accomplishment. I gratefully continue to witness much growth in his progress, and anxiously await the opportunity to carry this knowledge forward to help many more
