According to the dictionaries teacher means "someone whose job is to teach in school." Indeed it is. However there are so many aspects to fill in this definition. Being a teacher doesn't only mean to lecture your students in class but also being a role model, good listener, inspiration and motivator to your students as well.
Although I don't have a formal educational background in teaching profession, I have been teaching English for 3 years now and I am loving it. As a former ESL student myself I know how challenging but also exciting to learn a new language. It is not an easy task but with the help of a good educator learning process can be fun and informative at the same time. In order to educate others, I needed to educate myself first. Back in university I attended some teaching courses but it wasn't enough. I wanted to take this course first year of my teaching but at the time I was bonded with other responsibilities so I had to postpone my formal education. However, I've never stopped learning and improving myself. I bought many books about teaching English grammar,skills and classroom techniques. I signed up teaching blogs and tried to follow new techniques. Right now I am in touch with teachers all around the world and we share classroom ideas with each other. I work with all ages from 4 year olds to 50 year olds. They all have different approaches in learning English. Of course it is somewhat easier to work with small children because they don't come to you with pre set of minds that they can not speak English. So, I am able to get faster results with children. However, once they get a little bit older between the ages 10 to16 they start to think English as a burden and instead of learning something new they just memorize everthing for a short period of time to save the day. When they finally reach university they start to realize how important and necessary to learn English for their career but this time they feel desperate because they have so much to do at the same time. I have had many university students and graduates which told me that they feel stuck and don't know how to get over with learning English. I feel sorry for them and try to do my best to change their mind about learning English as not as hard they think it is but that is not an easy task. So one of the reasons why I want to become a professional teacher is to prevent students to think that English is hard to learn. As the matter of fact, I think Turkish educational system is responsible for students lack of confidence in learning English.
