Technological advancements have significantly changed the game of golf. Improvements and innovations in clubs, balls, gloves, shoes and equipment have made the game more available and easier to play for more golfers. Improvements in distance have been incredible. Fifteen years ago, John Daly was the only player on the PGA tour that could drive the ball on average over 300 yards; however, last year 25 players were over 300 yards and 71 other players reached an average of over 275 yards (Sarson). These advancements have significantly impacted the game and the manufacturers, but golf courses have been hurt by these changes as well. Unfortunately, many of the top golf courses have either had to add length and difficulty or they have become unusable for professional tournaments. Interestingly, Augusta National Golf Course, home of the Masters Tournament, added an additional 450 yards in the last 15 years, compared to 180 yards from 1940-2000 …show more content…

Technology and innovation in equipment have changed the game of golf. Some say that technology plays a bigger role in golf than in any other sport. Modern day professional golfers are breaking distance records due to the modern day golf ball. Golf equipment companies are working to find the next big innovation or improvement and both professionals and everyday golfers continue to want an “edge” to play their best. Many golf courses have had to adapt to golfers increased distance by lengthening their courses. High tech clothing lines, like Nike Dri Fit and Adidas's Climacool, help control players body temperatures while on the course and thus improve their overall performance.
