The Civil War was known as the “modern war” because of the many technological advancements that were made during that time. Most of us are aware of the weapon improvements that were made like the rifle. It allowed for long-range fire and was much more accurate than the muskets that were used before. This was because of the new bullet design, minie ball, that caused it to exit spinning at a high velocity while carrying bacteria that would cause infection inside a solider when shot. Torpedo’s or landmines were also another innovative weapon produced during the Civil War. On the sea, soldiers were in ironclad ships that were often built with rotating gun turrets, allowing soldiers to shot in any direction without turning the ship. Submarines were also developed. President Lincoln was able to issue orders to his commanders, move troops, receive battle results, and much more through the telegraph. Hot air balloons were used locate and track movements of other soldiers. They would then communicate with their commanders so they could reposition and fire more accurately.

Railroads were a vital innovation to the Civil War, they kept troops supplied. The south’s railway system was not as well established as the North's, even so, they used it very well. The tracks would transport reinforcements and even soldiers, that kept the war moving. Canned food was used frequently to feed soldiers. It was easy to store and transport.
