In the 21st century, there have been many technological advancements that have changed the way people think and act in society. These advancements in our civilization have led to the creation of new forms of media for entertainment and educational purposes. This may seem like a good thing but it most certainly does bring out many concerns for the well-being of people who do not know how to control their urges to understand when and when not to use their phone. The increased use of technology is harmful to society because it is associated with declining mental health and the more time people spend on technology the least likely they are going to participate in outdoor activities.

This can be supported by evidence from the book The Pedistrian because the main character, Leonard Mead, would go on walks, and on these walks he had he would see “the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows(Bradbury)”. This piece of evidence shows how the author is predicting that as a society if people continue this path of uncontrolled social media or phone usage, society would turn into one like The Pedestrian. The society in The Pedestrian is very much addicted to their screens, no one goes out of their houses because they can have fun right at their house. They could also argue back by saying social media has led to many people connecting with people they would have never talked to otherwise. The argument that The Pedestrian is a piece of fiction so it will never be true is a valid argument but this argument can be refuted because this piece of fiction shows what could happen if people can not control the amount of time they spend on screen. The Pedestrian could be considered realistic fiction as this situation might happen in the future.
