Technology and the Roaring Twenties Throughout the years we have seen many advances in technology. With these advances, we have seen both positive and negative effects. Some of the positive effects include automated machines that cultivate our food for us so we do not have to plant and grow food ourselves. We have seen advancements in electronic appliances. Before, if someone wanted to communicate with someone else who lived on the other side of the country, they would have had to have written a letter, mailed it, and waited a long time for the response from that person. Before the radio or TV, the only way to know what was going on in a sports game was to actually be at the game itself. Now people could be there without really being there or having to wait until the papers published the results of the game you were interested in. Lastly, in 1927, Philo Taylor Farnsworth invented a complete electronic TV set which would forever change American culture as we knew it (http://inventors.about.com
/od/timelines/a/twentieth_3.htm). Today millions of people spend most of their free time watching some kind of television. In fact our culture seems to be centered around on what’s on
TV, who’s on TV, how do we get to be like the people who are on TV, and what time does our favorite show come on the air. In my opinion, Farnsworth contributed more to the American zeitgeist than any other man on earth. Clearly, the twenties was a great and significant decade when it came to new and interesting technologies and I am sure we have more exciting features ahead of us in the near future.
