Ray Bradbury is the author of the novel, Fahrenheit 451. In this novel, Bradbury describes what he thinks the future will be like. Bradbury talks about mechanical hounds, wall-screens, seashell radios, beetle cars, and subways. Each piece of machinery has a specific purpose to certain characters in the novel. Ray Bradbury’s attitude towards technology is that the world will get so caught up in technology that it will be destroyed and not learn from past mistakes. Guy Montag is the main character in this novel. Montag is a fireman; his job is to burn any book that he comes across. Instead of using real dogs to help find books, the firemen use a mechanical hound. The hound’s job to is find books, find criminals who escape, and kill. If the hound was to find someone, the hound would inject a needle into the victim and kill the victim. Montag always thought that the hound was programmed to dislike him. Eventually, Montag breaks the hound while trying to escape. However, a neighboring fire department let the firemen use their hound to try and track Montag down. Mildred has a huge problem with the wall-screens and beetle cars. Wall-screens are like televisions today; she watches television all day long. Mildred thinks that the people on the screens are her family. When Mildred gets mad, she takes the beetle car and drives off. This is a problem because, she drives extremely fast. Mildred’s problems made her not sleep well at night. This led Mildred to take sleeping pills almost every night.
