In the dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the central ideas are made very clear by the author. One of the possible central ideas is that technology can have a negative impact. While technology is a positive in most situations, in the world of Fahrenheit 451 the way technology controls their lifestyle is unhealthy. Ray Bradbury uses conflict to demonstrate how modern technology affected the society Montag lives in. Conflict is a great way of portraying an author's idea, and Montag's internal and external conflicts in the book can prove that too much technology can be a bad thing. One way Ray Bradbury shows conflict is how Mildred is absorbed by the parlors in her house and does not care for the people around her. Mildred says, " How long you figure before we save up and get the fourth wall torn out and get a fourth wall-tv put in? It's only two thousand dollars." Montag replies, "That's one-third of my yearly pay." In response to Montag's rejection of the idea, Mildred goes, "It's only two thousand dollars …... If we had a fourth wall, why it'd be like this room wasn't ours at all, but all kinds of exotic peoples rooms. We can do without a few things." (Page 18) Montag and Mildred's conflict of ideas on how to use their money demonstrates how technology truly disconnects people from the real world. Mildred did not consider the concept of how buying the fourth parlor would affect her and Montag financially because of how badly she wanted to be immersed in her fantasy world. A second example of conflict representing the negative impact of technology is on page 9 when Montag starts to rethink his state of mind. "He was not happy.
