Technology In Oryx And Crake

In the novel, “Oryx and Crake” by Margaret Atwood, Atwood depicts technology as a way for people to take advantage of other people/animals for their own benefit. Atwood first shows this on page 22 when Jimmy was explaining his father’s job and what his father does. Jimmy says, “The goal of the pigoon project was to grow an assortment of foolproof human-tissue organs in a transgenic knockout pig host – organs that would transplant smoothly and avoid rejection, but would also be able to fend off attacks by opportunistic microbes and viruses, of which there were more strains every year”(Atwood 22). Atwood describes the process of how technology is used to create human organs from the pigoons. The pigoons are being taken advantage of by the humans.

Another place where Atwood shows this is on page 55 where Jimmy is explaining his father’s new job at Nooskins and what his father’s goal was. Jimmy says, “The main idea was to find a method of replacing the older epidermis with a fresh one, not a laser-thinned or dermabraded short-term resurfacing but a genuine start-over skin that would be wrinkle- and blemish-free”(Atwood 55). Atwood describes how the company Nooskins use pigoons and technology to create new skins for humans. The humans, once again, take advantage of the pigoons for their own benefit. The pigoons are being used by the humans to obtain youthful skin making the human society more advanced which only benefits the humans.Lastly Atwood shows this one last time on page 89 Crake and Jimmy were in a room surfing the web on Uncle Pete’s digital charge card and they stumble upon a website.
