Bradbury's depiction and perspective on technology is an accurate depiction of technology and how it influences people’s lives. For example, Bradbury's describes in Fahrenheit
Transported into the future, Ray Bradbury paints a picture in the reader’s head of the Happy Life Home, filled with technology to fit everyday needs. A family, mom, dad, and two kids, start to slowly fall apart because of being surrounded with technology. In The Veldt, Bradbury uses multiple examples of author’s craft such as personification and tone or mood to help prove and point out a theme included in his story. His theme contained in the story is, influencing children with so much technology early on can not only stir up violent thoughts but, can also cause breaks between friend and family relationships. The first author’s craft that can prove this theme to be true is personification.
In Ray Bradbury’s works “A Sound of Thunder” and “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains” he demonstrates a theme of technology being the ultimate downfall and chaotic antagonist of humanity. New historicism can be applied to both texts in order to find out the reason why Bradbury includes this theme of technological doom to some of his literary works. This viewpoint allows us to understand what happened during the time that may have influence Bradbury to write these short stories and develop his opinion on technology. It is important to note that during the time that Bradbury was writing these works, America was in the middle of World War 2.
The Battle of Nature and Technology Ray Bradbury’s distrust of technology is clear in his short story “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Written in 1950 and with World War II fresh on his mind, Bradbury knew that the possibility of a nuclear war was a reality. According to author Donna Haisty, “In Bradbury’s prophetic look at the future of modern society, human beings by the year 2026 have advanced to the point where they can control their material realm, but they cannot control their own destructive tendencies” (3). Bradbury uses personification and science fiction to show and magnify human conditions to his main character, the house, and to prove how nature will always defeat technology.

Science fiction is a fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes. The book’s purpose is to talk about how technology has unexpected downsides and can ruin your life as much as you think it could help. The theme of the book as a whole is to teach you that electronics/technology is not always needed and it can ruin your life and unexpectedly ruin you. I will talk about two stories out of eighteen stories to support the theme of the book, these two stories are Zero Hour and The Veldt.
In "There Will Come Soft Rains," Ray Bradbury shows readers several negative effects technology has made on mankind. Those effects are: People relying strongly on technology, Depending on technology can cause a person to lose their importance, and No matter how “strong” technology may be, nature overpowers all. Technology can be both destructive and helpful. In this story RayBradbury presents two sides of a technology debate. One of the sides is that technology is beneficial.
Ray Bradbury “You do not have to burn books to destroy a culture”. Just get people to stop reading them.” Ray Bradbury was a well-known American author. Technology has taken over the minds that there is no longer any control and they cannot even think freely. Ray Bradbury portrays how the future can bring harm and evil in his short story, “The Veldt” and how mankind can be destroyed in his short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Bradbury joined the Los Angeles League where fans of science fiction would publish magazines known as “fanzines” and he eventually produces four of his own fanzines, including Future Fantasia, in 1939 (Veldt ). In “The Flying Machine” by Ray Bradbury, Emperor Yuan was wrong to kill the flying man; by doing so, he ignored individual liberty for possibly the greater good. Before the flier’s execution, the Emperor and the flying man argued their beliefs by explaining why he should not and should be executed. For instance, the Emperor insisted that “...one must lose a little beauty if one is to keep what little beauty one already has” (Bradbury lines 135-136). The Emperor believed that killing one would save many. However, it is uncertain that the flying machine would have been used for evil.
Omar Bradley spoken once that, “If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.” In the 1950’s, Ray Bradbury writes a stories about how technology could change the future. In Ray Bradbury’s “The Flying Machine,” Bradbury claims that inventions that people create are intended to help but the outcome can be negative or positive. There are several details that support his statement. First, “the Emperor looked into the sky. And in the sky, laughing so high that you could hardly hear him laugh, was a man.” This is the first time the Emperor say the flying machine
Bradbury believes that technology is a benefactor when it comes to the aid of people’s lives. However, Bradbury is also wary of the unintentional hazards technological innovation may cause, and fears technology that seems to replace human responsibility. Bradbury sums up his doubts, stating that technology should never come at the expense of human life. These ideologies are displayed throughout the following short stories: “The Veldt,” “There Will Come Soft Rains,” and “A Sound of Thunder.” Each story contains the underlying theme that technology must be wielded with great care.
Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt” teaches readers that too much technology can have a bad effect on people. In the story, the Hadley family lives in a Happylife Home which has machines that do pretty much everything for them. The machines make their meals, brush their teeth and tie their shoelaces. There is even a nursery for the children that creates any world they could imagine. In the end of the story, the nursery and the family take a turn for the worse.
