Scientists, doctors, psychologists, and many others believe that technology has become a major distraction and danger to many, if not all, people. This can be seen in the story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury where the highly advanced technology becomes the children’s soul focus and importance causing them to lose sight of what really matters. In “The Veldt,” George and Lydia, the parents of Wendy and Peter, become concerned when the nursery, a technologically advanced room, continues to play a scene of lions killing their prey. While the nursery was meant to be a helpful tool for the children, it turned into a way for the kids to channel negative thoughts. This prompts George and Lydia to contemplate whether or not to shut down the nursery.
Everyone knows what it’s like to have their technology taken away from them. At some point in their life everybody’s been angry at their parents or family members. The Veldt by Ray Bradbury uses symbolism, imagery, and similes to convey the story of a futuristic family whose children took this too far. In The Veldt, the author Ray Bradbury uses a lot of imagery, similes, and symbolism to present and African veldt, making more relatable emotions and to teach how neglect can change the way you think, and how too much technology is never a good thing.
Transported into the future, Ray Bradbury paints a picture in the reader’s head of the Happy Life Home, filled with technology to fit everyday needs. A family, mom, dad, and two kids, start to slowly fall apart because of being surrounded with technology. In The Veldt, Bradbury uses multiple examples of author’s craft such as personification and tone or mood to help prove and point out a theme included in his story. His theme contained in the story is, influencing children with so much technology early on can not only stir up violent thoughts but, can also cause breaks between friend and family relationships. The first author’s craft that can prove this theme to be true is personification.
This is different than in the Veldt because, in the Veldt, nothing really makes the parents question if all the technology they have in their house is good or bad, but in the end, a psychologist tells them and by then it is too late to do the right
When they confront the children, the children change it immediately, and feign ignorance. Later, as its switched back, they find George’s bloody wallet inside. The psychologist urges them to move, but, the children trap the parents in the nursery, and order the simulation to kill the parents. In “The Veldt”, the author uses imagery and foreshadowing to show the possible negative and dangerous effects that technology
Conservatives believe in limited government intervention and personal responsibility while liberals believe in increased government intervention and that the responsibility of repairing social ills lies with the government. Conservatives are pro-life, while liberals are pro-choice. Liberals are opposed to the death penalty while conservatives support it. Conservatives are in favor of a free-market system while liberals are in favor of a market system with government regulation. Despite their disagreements, conservatives and liberals seem to both agree on prison reform and the majority of foreign relations; although their ideologies may differ on how to approach these problems they both agree that these problems need to be confronted.
Science fiction is the only genre that depicts how society could operate in a different form. Rather than using mythology or divine influence, writers are using science fiction to connect to audiences. Science fiction displays a new scientific discovery, technology, or social system, and delves into the consequences of this change. In science fiction novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury describes a dystopian world where books have been banned and individuality threatened. With science fiction, an author can simulate a situation and the possibilities that are available.
This theme is shown in many instances throughout the story. For example, the parents and children experience many side effects from having everything done for them including depression and worthlessness. Also, the children become spoiled by all of the technology and the technology replaces their human relationships. Some people may introduce other themes for “The Veldt”, but the most noticeable theme is technology. What people can learn from “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury is to not let technology overtake
1. The theme of “the Veldt” is to not let technology control life. This is shown throughout the short story because it shows many times where technology has taken over people’s lives. For example, in the short story it says, “… this house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them” (Bradbury 1).
Science fiction is based on futuristic science and gadgets, or technology advances. The illustrated man has many themes. Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man has a common theme throughout the book, is technology advances. Technology advances is important because it impacts relationships and minds.

To start off, technology should not be exposed to children because it makes them addicted to it.
Jackson once said, “Technology has made life so convenient for us that it’s almost scary to think of what would happen if we had to go without our favorite gadget for an extended period of time”. Technology is something that is seen every day but there is a limit, as shown in Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt” when something goes wrong. The children Wendy and Peter are being raised in a technologically driven house which the parents think is helping them, but is actually causing more issues. The constant exposure to technology causes the children to be violent, lazy, and lack empathy. First, technology causes the children the short story “The Veldt” to be violent.
The theme in this story is how the technology turned on the people and filed to make their life better. The technology in the conflict made the human’s life bad. In the story “The Veldt” the conflict is that the veldt turned into the kid’s parent. The veldt is a room that will can the scenery to whatever you said.
Bradbury explores themes of technology, parenting, and the consequences of indulgence. “The Veldt” also provides caution about the consequences of what technology and fictional things can do. For example, in the story it led to the destruction of the parents from the virtual lion. The consequences of technology can lead to failure of family relationships and relying heavily on technology for entertainment purposes can have a negative impact on any personal relationships. “They walked down the hall of their soundproofed Happy-life Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars installed, this house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them”(Bradbury P. 331)
A problem in “The Veldt” was that they were addicted to technology. According to addiction.com, surveys show that 1.5 to 8 percent of the population is addicted to technology. According to CNN, about 50% of teenagers are addicted to technology. The kids were addicted to the nursery, so they didn’t want to do anything other than play in the nursery. This caused them to act irrationally when their parents suggested turning off the nursery.
