Technology Technology can be both a good thing and a bad thing. In this case, Bradbury shows that too much of anything (technology) is a bad thing. He takes the innocent actions of two parents and shows the consequences in their choices. In the Veldt, Bradbury uses Metaphor and symbolism to convey the idea dependence on technology causes separation in families. Bradbury uses the metaphor “They had the Santa and now they have the scrooge” to convey the dependence on technology the family has. The quote refers to the technology in the house as Santa and the parents as the scrooge. This is important because it tells the reader that the house gives them everything they need and or want just like Santa. However, the only thing the parents do for them is punish them by taking away their Santa. This effects the story because it conveys that the parents really do not do anything for the children. It also explains why the children lie and disrespect their parents. The story says, “You’ve let this room and this house replace you and your wife in your children’s affections. This room is their mother and father, far more important in their lives than their real parents.” This quote is significant because it shows how the family is separating. The parents are letting the house take over the role parents are supposed to play. This effects the story because it represents the moment the parents found out that their choice to fill the house with technology was almost the worst thing they could have done. In addition, it tells the reader why the kids are lying and disrespecting their parents throughout the story.
