Technology such as global positioning systems, televisions, and cell phones are all systems that are utilized widely, as they aid humans in performing day to day tasks. But in “The Veldt,” the reader is presented with numerous forms of advanced technology, most of which seem outlandish in today’s time. In both real and fictional situations, technology plays a major role in determining how one’s life plays out. In the story, the house that the family lives in is a highly advanced, futuristic home. This can be inferred by the myriad of advanced technology that is discussed in the story. One of the most eye-catching pieces of technology in this house is the “nursery” room, which possesses glass walls that can change into any realistic scene as soon as a person thinks about the scene. A few prime examples of technology that allow people to become more lazy include dishwashers and laundry machines. Even though these machines improve the quality of life of society as a whole, they have the potential to promote human idleness. Consequently, people rely more on the functions of machines, and less on their own capabilities. In “The Veldt”, a primary example of this concept is the kitchen table, which can produce items as soon as a person commands it to do so. In the story, George Hadley asks the table to fetch them a bottle of ketchup, which it executes immediately.
