Dear Professor Hubbell-Staeble, Reading the article about multi-tasking was a shocking fact to learn how much time a person wastes in one day. In the article, “Technology: The Myth of Multi-Tasking”, Dr. Jim Taylor defines multi-tasking as doing multiple actions at the same time. Today, society seeks multi-tasking as a way to get everything over with, but instead Americans are adding more stress to their daily lives by not accomplishing tasks as quickly as desired. In conclusion, this idea of multi-tasking is not an effective way of accomplishing tasks throughout the day. Dr. Jim Taylor states, “Well, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but it means that what you do isn't really multitasking. Despite appearances, you simply can't talk on the phone, read e-mail, send an instant message, and watch YouTube videos all at the same time” (Taylor, 2011). The author is stating how impossible multi-tasking is. I agree with him, because doing one activity first before starting another is a great way to focus, and to make sure everything is done right the first time. Doing an action one after another is better than “serial tasking,” which is attempting to multi-task at a fast pace. There are numerous amount of times I thought I have been getting so much done, and I glance at the clock and realize nothing was done after spending hours trying to finish a paper or read a book.
