Some products they produce and mine include: coal, copper, steel, zinc, lead, silver, gold, molybdenum, germanium and indium (Teck Resources Limited, 2015). The International labour organization estimates that only 1% of the world’s labour force participates in the mining industry. However, they account for 5% of all job related fatalities worldwide (Hubmining, 2011). Although the Teck resources have certainly improved the working conditions for their workers, mine workers are exposed to workplace dangers such as: respiratory issues, whole body vibrations, UV exposure, musculoskeletal issues, chemical hazards and physical hazards (Hubmining, 2011). Due to the dangerous nature of the industry, Canadian mining companies invest a large amount of time and resources in order to maintain the safety of their employees (Mining Association of Canada, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to develop a first aid protocol for the frequent injuries that occur in the Teck resources company. The first aid protocol will include: protocol steps, policy, role of the occupational health nurse, personal protective equipment, specialized equipment and supplies, occupational health nurse follow-up, documentation, responsibility of team members, assessments and when to call EMS. The on-site occupational nurse assures that personal protective equipment is readily available to staff and must complete regular compliance audits. Personal protective equipment found within the site includes but are not limited to: 1. Protective Hard-hats and cap lights: To protect the head from injury of falling objects, collapses, debris, etc. Lights are intended to provide the worker with vision in hard-to see areas (Craciun, 2014). 2. Goggles/ Protective eyewear: To protect the worker from substances that can cause irritation to the eyes. This can include optic radiation, splash, molten metals, liquid chemicals, gas, dust, etc (Craciun, 2014). 3. Respiratory protective equipment e.g. breathable face masks, respirators: Intended to protect the worker from toxins and other harmful particles that can impair respiration as well as lack of oxygen (Craciun, 2014). 4. Ear plugs/ hearing protection: Intended to reduce noise and minimize damage to the ears. The regular use of heavy-duty vehicles, machinery and tools may cause long-term injury to the ears.
