According to a recent study released by National Bureau of Economic Research, the reality show “16 and Pregnant” ultimately led to a 5.7% reduction in teen births in the 18 months after its premiere on TV. This TV show is set out to show teen girls the struggles and problems they would have to face if getting pregnant at a young age and to prevent the rates of teen pregnancy from increasing. Teen pregnancy rates have fallen despite the popularity of MTV’s “Teen Mom” program, which promotes safe sex precautions and, most important, the program does not glamorize the difficult life of a teen mom. The show makes sure to promote these important messages to the youth of America by having links for teens to access them at anytime. “Every time the show airs, MTV promotes a website called StayTeen.org that “encourages you to enjoy your teen years and avoid the responsibilities that come with too-early pregnancy and parenting” (Dockterman). She didn’t give up even with all the things going on around her, Kailyn goes to say “Between teen motherhood, financial hurdles in the beginning, then moving to a new state, marriage, babies and divorce… and then of course just wanting to give up, I (barely) held on,” she wrote of her struggle to get her degree (Quinn). They are able to accomplish this things in spite of being a full time mom and having other problems they have to face. This is another way that disproves Henson’s view that the show has an negative impact on teens.

Despite what people may think about “Teen Mom,” the show is really helpful to young teens because it shows the struggles and the difficulties that teen moms face daily. The reason why this is important to know is so parents don’t look at the TV show as a bad influence to young teens who may be watching. I am a teen mom and I can relate to some of the struggles they face. I want to inform the older adults that the show is more helpful than they think and could help a lot of young girls stay
