Being able to drive is the first real taste of freedom one gets when they turn 16. When a teen gets their license it makes the world much smaller, they can now come to and from school, the store, and hanging out with friends on their own. It also makes the lives of parents much easier since they no longer have to cart their teen around to school, games, and everywhere else. However, The fact is that even with the numerous tests and extensive practice one must go through in order to obtain a license, there is no telling how a driver will act once they are alone, or how they will respond to dangerous situations. That being said, teen drivers have a notorious history of not being the safest or smartest drivers on the road.

The most obvious reason is simply that teen drivers lack the experience of drivers who have been driving for years. (“Teen Drivers” para 6). Teen drivers have not logged in the amount of hours behind the wheel needed to gain the experience in various situations on the road to help be able to avoid a bad situation. Younger drivers are also notably immature in their habits, they are likely to engage in dangerous activities such as speeding, following too closely, passing inappropriately, and driving without a seat belt. The first of these policies is the graduated licensing system, which puts stipulations on where, when, and who you can drive. (“Teen Drivers” para 7). These systems work to keep teens off the roads in tricky situations like late night driving, or driving with a car full of other teenagers. The other obvious ways to help increase driving safety are general rules that everyone should follow such as: not driving under the influence, watching the number of people you transport, and limiting nighttime driving. (“Teen Drivers” para 8).
We know that teen drivers aren’t always the best drivers, even though some of them like to believe they are, but by limiting the possible dangerous situations, and acting our age, we can help to reduce these dangers. The new policies and restrictions on teen drivers will help to lower insurance premiums for parents, and keep teens safer by practicing safe driving habits. We need to be an example for young drivers, and positively engrain safe driving practices so that the road will be a safer place for
