From Orwell’s novel, “1984”, it can be determined that his opinion on the most powerful means of control by the government would be the government’s use of fear to instill paranoia among the people. One powerful piece of corroboration for fear to paranoia would be Oceania’s obvious, and constant, use of technology to fulfill this goal. Take, for instance, the telescreens. Because of their existence in every buildings’ rooms and corners, they can be easily used to keep an eye on party members, and if need be, used to track their location and arrest them. Winston experiences the surveillance inflicted by the government during one of his daily workouts,as right when he stopped trying in order to ponder the conspiracies surrounding the party,
Individuals suspected of committing thoughtcrimes were detained, subjected to torture, and often murdered by the Thought Police. The Thought Police monitored residents' thoughts and actions through surveillance and psychological manipulation. “There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.” (5) The central protagonist of 1984, Winston Smith, was too afraid to look at the telescreen that would be watching him.
Telescreens are used within 1984 in order to constantly display propaganda, as well as for the government to gain insight into the private lives of the public. In several manners, the citizens of London are unknowingly subject to manipulation through the telescreen. For example, excluding the Inner Party, the telescreen is required to stay on constantly, projecting false information to every citizen, as well as awaking them in the morning to exercise. Also, telescreens feature both a camera and a microphone. These allow the Thought Police to monitor every action and sound of party citizens, and hence prosecute them if they are believed to be rebelling or not loving Big Brother.
Even though Orwell's predictions of what 1984 would look like may have not been one hundred percent accurate but they are pretty close to becoming true. The technology may be more advanced in today's society but the idea of people being watched by their governments is still there. It doesn't matter if the technology has changed in the past decades but it still doesn't stop any government from being able to look through your things without you noticing them in the first place. You can live in a place where the government is completely democratic or totalitarian but the thing is anyone can monitor your every

There have been several accounts of privacy invasions surrounding governments of different countries spying on their citizens and surveillance cameras being streamed to various public websites. These issues make the definition of privacy vary, when it should be set in stone. Privacy isn’t something that should change depending on who you are. There are instances when privacy should be limited and it those cases it is for the right reasons.
