In the story The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator is sane and guilty of murder. The narrator spends seven days thinking about how to kill the old man. He said that if he could just rid himself of the old man’s eye things would be fine. The narrator also knew that once he killed the old man he would have to hide the body. Every night for a week, before he killed the old man, the narrator would sneak into the man’s room but it would take him a whole hour before just to get his head through the door. This also proves that the narrator is sane because he has the patience to take his time to sneak through the door. To begin with the narrator gave a reason why he wanted to kill the old man. After the narrator makes up his mind he says “Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. That night, he waited in his room for a while until a ray of light from the lantern in the room shined on the old man’s eye and then his eye opens and the narrator says “It was open --wide, wide open --and I grew furious as I gazed upon it” (Poe 9). Even after that the narrator still did not kill him yet. An insane person could not be so hesitant and patient. He waited and just watched him. “Yet, for some minutes longer I refrained and stood still” (Poe 11). After being very patient he couldn't hold anymore he even stated “The old man’s hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once --once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done” (Poe 11). So the narrator suffocated the old man and did it with pleasure because after he killed him he smiled because he did not have to deal with the eye anymore. An insane person would not have any feeling about killing a person because they wouldn't know completely what they were doing, but after the narraor killed the man he smiled and he also knew exactly what to do with the body. If the narrator was insane he would not try to hide the body he would
