Did you know 1 in 5 Canadians will experience some form of mental illness. Some will experience it to a greater degree than others. Anise, the main character of the book Gravity Journal by Gail Sidonie Sobat, is one of many one in five. She has anorexia and depression and is hospitalized for the second time because of it. She spends her hospital stays in ward 4-psych-o, a very ironically named ward.
With Dan unaware of his actions, and constantly facing mild dissociative disorder, a police officer was assigned to follow his every step. The last section of the novel, Asylum by Madeleine Roux, included many obstacles the protagonist had to face. Dan Crawford, began the novel by spending his summer in the New Hampshire Prep program, as he began to uncover secrets hiding in the dorms he uncovered secrets about his past. With residing at Brookline, a shutdown mental hospital, many spin tingling secrets began to rise. Since Dan is a foster child and his biological parents decide to hide, much of his history has been covered.

Nellie uses logos throughout the two body paragraphs to express the inhumane conditions she was being confined in. Nellie also uses disturbing diction throughout the body paragraphs to make the audience who read the paper to really understand the place she was put into. The use of diction expresses a serious tone throughout the entirety of the paper to ultimately spread awareness and cause change in these inhumane hospitals. Nellie Bly applies to logos at the start of her second paragraph as she dedicates half of it to strictly one statement;
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a story of a young Mexican girl growing up in the United States. Her name is Esperanza, and the novel takes the reader into her mind and heart as she reminisces about her childhood and what she hoped for in her future. Throughout the novel, Cisneros uses various symbols to highlight the inner conflicts within Esperanza. One of those symbols is shoes. Cisneros uses shoes symbolically throughout the novel to represent parts of Esperanza’s thoughts, emotions, and dreams as she undergoes a transformation from childhood innocence to the realities of adulthood.

The episode covered the possibilities of many particular situations that may have occurred in a desperate time like this if a missile was launched at the United States. At the beginning of the episode, Rod Serling himself tells us “what you are about to watch is a nightmare.” We get a very ominous sense of what is coming due to the eerie music that had been playing in the background, and we soon find out that this episode is just that. A nightmare, in the sense of the event that is occurring but also the constant battle of a nightmare between thoughts that may drive one crazy as well as those thoughts mixed with the people you knew as “friends.”
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, considers the qualities in which society determines sanity. The label of insanity is given when someone is different from the perceived norm. Conversely, a person is perceived as sane when their behavior is consistent with the beliefs of the majority. Although the characters of this novel are patients of a mental institution, they all show qualities of sanity. The book is narrated by Chief Brodmen, an observant chronic psychiatric patient, who many believe to be deaf and dumb.
The novel “The Haunting of Hill House,” written by Shirley Jackson, closely follows the traditional tropes of an American Gothic. The main character of the novel, Eleanor, begins her journey to self growth after accepting an offer to live in a suspected haunted house for the summer. Moreover, Eleanor meets three other people that have an important effect on her development as a person. These characters slowly begin to question their own sanity due to the house’s destructive nature. Jackson appeals to fans of the American gothic through her particular description of the house and how the characters interact with it in order to show the environments foil of an absolute reality.
She was an isolated soul that was made to believe she should be kept hiding from the outside world. Being discriminated against her looks not only brought her will to live down but caused her to see the world a place that she did not belong in. This caused her to have depression. A person should not be treated for how they look or how they are. Doing things such as discriminating or isolating a person could very well lead them to believe that they have no part or say in the world they live in.
Timothy Shay Arthur’s “Ten Nights in a Bar-Room” is a novel filled with unfortunate events that change the lives of many families. It illustrates the lives of a few men, who were once proper gentlemen, but transformed into undesirable people due to intemperance. Their stories demonstrate how destructive alcohol was to their lives, not only for them, but for their families as well. One of the characters that immediately caught my attention was Joe Morgan. Joe went from being an enviable father and husband, and even Mr. Slade’s former business partner, to the town drunk and an absent father.
1. Analysis The novel, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, delivers many obstacles overcome by the young protagonist, Auggie. Many themes can be found in this novel, but the most prominent is the power of how family and friendship help Auggie adjust to new situations. Danny Boyle utilises film techniques such as Costuming, Camera shots and Dialogue to show the theme “Brutality of Humanity”.

Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott focuses on four sisters; Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March that are a part of a very poor, humble family. While their father is off at war, they are left with their loving mother at home encouraging them to be a better person and the better version of themselves. As all four girls go through love and loss, they discover that they are truly brave and courageous. One very important major event was when the March sisters struggle to improve their various flaws as they grow into adults. Jo dreams of becoming a great writer and does not want to become a conventional adult woman.
