On October 31, 2015, a women by the name of Teresa Halbach goes missing at around 5:00 P.M after taking pictures of Steven Avery’s van at his house at 3:00 PM for the Auto Trader Magazine. On November 5, 2015, Police officers and detectives search Avery’s Property and on November 8th, find the keys to Halbach’s Toyota Rav4 in Avery’s bedroom, next to his nightstand. When officers searched the Rav4, they found Avery’s blood inside the car and his DNA found on the Rav4 key. On November 9, 2015, Steven Avery is arrested under the charge of possessing firearms after the discovery of a .22 caliber and questioned about the disappearance of Teresa Halbach. The car was located on the Avery property in the family’s junkyard. A blood stain was found next to the ignition, matching Avery’s DNA. In total, 6 of the blood stains matched Avery’s DNA. Besides for the stain on the dashboard by the ignition, they were located on a CD case, on the two front seat cushions, and close to the front passenger seat. Other blood stains were found in the rear cargo area of the vehicle by the passenger seat that looked like bloody head hair being brushed against the surface of the car. The car stains in the rear matched Halbach’s DNA. During the investigation, it was made clear that Avery had a cut on his right middle finger when he was questioned. An EDTA test, establishing if the blood was planted there by an outside source, proved that there was no EDTA present in the swabs from the RAV4, meaning the blood was not planted. Only 3 of the 6 swabs were tested using this test. Laboratory Data Quality Auditor Jane Arizyu testified that when there is no presence of EDTA found in the test, it does not mean that that it wasn’t there In Steven Avery’s Pontiac Grand Am, several blood stains were found. The stains were found on the gear shift, the top and passenger side of the center console, and on the front edge of one of the back seats. On October 31, Steven Avery called AutoTrader to request “the photographer who had been out to the property previously,” Teresa Halbach. Avery left his sister’s name and number instead of his own. Halbach returned to the Avery property despite her previous interaction with Avery. Her last known photography appointment was with Avery at his home and place of business, Avery’s Auto Salvage (to photograph a minivan he was selling). After the murder, Halbach’s vehicle was found hidden on the grounds of Avery’s Auto Salvage, a 40-acre property. Charred bone fragments discovered in a burn pit near Avery’s residence were identified as belonging to Teresa Halbach. Both Avery’s and Halbach’s blood were found in Halbach’s car. Police officers found the keys to Halbach’s Toyota Rav4 in Avery’s bedroom, and Avery’s DNA was found on the keys. Halbach’s DNA was found on the spent bullet in Avery’s garage.
