Dysgraphia Dyslexia Storm McAdams HCC Community College Abstract From the time students start school they are given a crayon or pen and they are instructed on how to trace letters on pre-printed paper. As humans we learn threw repetition, as we constantly do something we train our minds and our hands. But what happens when the human mind and the human hand do not work together. Many people have studied the learning disorder dyslexia however many of the public do not realize that there is another form the disorder called Dysgraphia. This disorder is harder to spot because people blame the child for being lazy instilling fear and making an excellent student into a fearful student that might be labeled as troubled or may act out. Dorian is a thriving eleven-year-old who at times is like many other kids. He likes to play video games and play with his dog. He is what you might call a kid with a high IQ scoring 140, however for the first four years of his five years in school he was failing. At first the teacher wanted to blame the parents and the student claiming that Dorian was “Acting out and being disruptive”! He would become overwhelmed in class and throw fits and act out, talking about cats and rolling on the ground. By his third year the school was ready to label Dorian “Emotionally disturbed” because of his out bursts. His mother had to fight the school to have him tested and for two years Dorian was falling behind and losing faith in himself. However, after going to a doctor and having him placed on Vyvance and getting a 504 special needs test done it was discovered that Dorian was not a bad kid or a child that was Disturbed but a child suffering from Dysgraphia/ADHD. With Dorian this statement could not be truer, at first it as noticed that he was hyperactive and was also having issues with reading. His older sister had struggled through her first years of school and was tested in middle school and was found to have dyslexia. It should also be noted that there is a family history of dyslexia. Both Dorian and his older sister, under the instruction of the Timbers Elm were held back because of what the school called immaturity
