Social media plays a big role in today’s society. Everyone wants/needs to be in the know about everyone and everything. According to Richard Epstein, a senior fellow at the hoover institution, social media portrays positives and negatives to today’s society, but disagrees with Jacob Silverman’s views on social media. According to Silverman, the author of the book Terms of Service, he carries very negative views of social media. My personal views on social media are very open. I believe social media can be a positive outlet for those to share and create things and share them with the public, but can also be very pessimistic by using social media as a negative outlet to share things that can hurt or harm others. Social media users are so caught up in having to make sure everyone they follow knows what they are doing at all times in order to get a sense of self-fulfillment or pride. Users are more interested in getting likes rather than actually enjoying whatever they are doing. I do agree with what Silverman is arguing. Many of my peers including myself at times use social media as an outlet to “show off” what we are doing whether it is going to a concert, going out to eat, or just hanging out with friends. "Photos become less about memorializing a moment than communicating the reality of that moment to others," continues Silverman, "they are also a way to handle the newfound anxiety over living in the present moment, knowing that our friends and colleagues may be doing something more interesting at just that very moment, and that we will see those experiences documented later on social media.
