Terrible and sudden events can change who you are as a person. People all go through tough times, and deal with it in their own ways. Some, like Viktor Frankl, believe that everyone responds differently to every situation. Others, like Edward Said, believe people create a rift between themselves and a native place. Wiesel had become what Said was explaining, which is a man who has drifted from his true self. Elie healed the rift between himself and his native place in response to the Holocaust. Some people may think that Elie wallowed in sadness after the Holocaust. Some might think this because he had lost his entire family. However, this claim is invalid because Wiesel took charge of his life instead of sulking. He dedicated his life to never letting people forget about the horrible tragedy. “I swore to never be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation” (Elie Wiesel, Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, Oslo, Dec 10, 1986). No one spoke up against or tried to help those being tortured during the Holocaust. Therefore, he swore to never let anyone go through that pain and misery again. “I have tried to keep memory alive” (Elie Wiesel, Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, Oslo, Dec 10, 1986). Wiesel also wanted everyone to always remember the massacre so that it never happened again. Elie connected with his humanity again after the Holocaust. Wiesel was an innocent boy at first, however, circumstances made him think evil thoughts. For example, “Don’t let me find him!” (Night 101) shows his dark thoughts. He was contemplating leaving his dad for dead in order to save himself. This thought would have never occurred to him before, but the tragic events he went through made him that way. Elie had become a savage who thought about killing his father, but he was able to get in touch with his humanity
