In Shirley Jackson’s story “The Lottery,” the anger after losing causes the main character, Tessie Hutchinson, to try and get others hurt to save herself, demonstrating how awful sportsmanship can cause us to hurt others and ourselves. Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” takes place in a village on June 27th- the day of the lottery. Tessie Hutchinson is one of the village people. Her husband, Bill Hutchinson, drew the marked slip of paper. This outcome angered her and caused her to try and get her other family members to take their chances with them. After her family did a redraw, she got the marked slip of paper and started calling for a redo, yelling that it wasn’t fair. This is significant because it shows how loss can affect some people and influence their actions. Tessie is so against losing that it makes her have bad sportsmanship, leading her to hurt herself a little and attempt to hurt others to save herself. Tessie was willing to have her children get hurt just so she doesn’t have to, when instead she should be doing the opposite, and trying to get her kids out of that situation like any caring mother would. However, Tessie let her poor sportsmanship get in the way, leading her to embarrass herself and try to hurt her children instead of protecting them. At the end of “The Lottery”, Shirley Jackson develops the theme that poor sportsmanship can cause those who lose to hurt themselves or others in the scene where after it was discovered that Bill had the marked paper, the box was emptied and refilled with enough papers for his family including one marked paper. On page 8, Shirley Jackson wrote, “ ‘It isn’t fair, it isn’t right,’ Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her,” (pg. 8). The syllable of the syllable. This shows that Tessie did not care about whether or not the lottery was right or wrong, Tessie only cared about protecting and saving herself. If Tessie had truly cared about how right or wrong the lottery was, she would have protested sooner, not just when she was the unlucky person who lost. This proves that Tessie didn’t care about how right or wrong the lottery was, and she never did, Tessie only cared about saving herself and trying to get herself out of the situation. One of the main themes in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, is that the feelings that are caused by losing can cause us to hurt ourselves or others to make ourselves feel better.
