Attending the Texas History Symposium 2018 that was held at the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD) on March 3, 2018, I found it to be very interesting. Although we hear about the historical events that happened hundreds of years ago through our history books and our history professors, I believe a way one can truly capture the essence of these happenings is by attending these educational conferences. Attendees for this Symposium were professors and students from South Texas College, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), and high school teachers. In addition, people from the community and the surrounding areas also attended, along with students from Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU). This yearly event is done for the sole purpose of promoting the participation of Tejanos in the Texas Independence. However, their vision is to bring awareness and acknowledgement to the Tejanos who participated in the Independence of Texas and in U. S. history. Listening to the Keynote Speakers retell the accounts of these battles that occur between Mexicans, Anglos, American Natives and Tejanos, I realized the fighting for power over these lands has been going on for a long time.
