While I was looking through YouTube for sound clips to analyze for my soundscape project I came across a soundscape that was based around a scary encounter. I choose to present a soundscape that deemed to be classified as being scary because I have always been intrigued with the level of difficulty it takes to create intense scary soundscapes for various horror movies. I came across a clip called “Scary Soundscape” on YouTube that had just over one thousand views and it was just under the two-minute mark. I specifically picked this clip because I thought it demonstrated many elements of sound that I was looking to analyze with my project. After the Owl hooting sound effect, a repetitive whispering noise was heard. The repetitive whispering noise was modified electronically to have a creepy tone to support the overall scary theme of the clip. As I continued listening to the clip, I was introduced to a new sound of somebody opening a zipper, perhaps on his or her jacket, which indicates the presences of someone in the clip. Following the zipper sound, I could hear footstep’s walking through leaves, which tells me that somebody is trying to escape or was walking in or out of a forest. Next, what I heard was a child’s voice singing with an electronic modified tone which increased the pitch. After the singing, I could identify the gender of the person walking through the woods, which was a man. I could infer this as there was a deepened gasp before the individual started running away. As he runs away there was a baby laugh that occurred in the background with slight tone modifications to enhance the creepy effect the rest of the sound clip was trying to portray. Our re-creation soundscape demonstrates an effective use of music, sound effects, and reinforcement to provide the audience with an emotional auditory experience. The music provided an atmosphere to our audience, as it set the mood of the performance. The use of a slower, piano song set a serious tone, which the audience quickly picked up on. The intensity of the music gave the audience information about the types of emotions they should be channeling while listening to the presentation. These emotions included somber, gloomy, troubled, etc. All of the sound effects displayed in the piece allowed for emphasis on words that required it. It was important to bold words such as “caution”, “pantry”, and “rain”; for example, because it creates a graphic image in the audience’s thoughts, bringing the story to life. Lastly, reinforcement was used to boost the narration, so it remained the primary focus all throughout the piece.
