Lane Kruse Mr. Whitaker English 9 13 February 2023 The Odyssey compared with O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Odyssey written by Homer in the early 7th century B.C. is a fascinating story about Odysseus and his struggles to return home, after the long war in Troy.
Exposition: The Outsiders By S.E Hinton doesn't make the setting very clear, but I think the story takes place in an unnamed city in the united states in the early 1960's. In the novel, there is the West side, and the East side, the Greasers, “The poorer than the Socs and the middle class” (Hinton 2) live on the East side. I The story introduces the main characters- Pony Boy Curtis a 14 year old who is the narrator of the story and, brother to Soda and Darry “ I have light-brown, almost-red hair and greenish-gray eyes” (Hinton 1), Sodapop Curtis a 16 year old and middle brother to Ponyboy and Darry “ Soda is handsomer than anyone else I know.” “He's not as tall as darry, and he's a little slimmer” (Hinton 7), Darrel Curtis a 20 year old also
Pleasantville is a movie in which the entire town is convinced that people are to abide by several ludicrous rules. Their ignorance is what leads them to their repression. Prior to David’s coming, the town was all black and white, where there are no fires, and there are no changes from the townspeople everyday activities. Although one might perceive it to be a boring lifestyle, the townspeople do not, and rather go about their everyday business, submitting to authority. They seem to enjoy it, even though it is just because they are ignorant of there being any other way or ways to live.
Throughout the course of cinematic history one of the most popular genres of film has been “gangster” or “crime”, in particular a focus on the Mafia. A couple of the most popular films have been The Godfather, The Godfather Part ii, and Goodfellas. Some of the similar characteristics that the audience notices after watching these movies are: violence, power, family, etc. Of course those examples of films come from the perspective of the American directors who made them. Films like La Siciliana Ribelle (The Sicilian Girl) and I Cento Passi (One Hundred Steps) offer a perspective from Italian filmmakers.
The Melancholy Dean vs. The Melancholy Don In Mario Puzo’s ‘The Godfather,’ the protagonist, Michael Corleone, is not typically looked at as a tragic hero. Although he does not have an obvious definitive “fatal flaw,” many similarities can be drawn between him and one of the most famous tragic heroes, Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Their roles as troubled heirs to power, the theme of revenge, and the concept of a fall from “grace” are only a few examples of how these two figures can be associated. To further explore, we must understand the origins of the stories and what set both of these characters up for their ultimate fate.
In Hitchcock film Manny (Henry Fonda) in order to eke out a living plays jazz, to say more specifically the swing, which uses a percussion-bass ground with brass melody. The jazz is the quintessence/epitome of American culture that flowered from slavery and despair of black Americans igniting hope. Hermann’s “Prelude” (the main credit theme) “accurately represents the dour/gloomy Manny Balestrero, whose middle class existence in the1950s is anything but jazzy,” writes Jack Sullivan. He also notes that “at the end of the main title, Manny appears on the left of the screen standing rigidly, like a marionette, a striking contrast to the festive balloons floating above” (211). It is interesting to note that Manny plays swing rather than serious

Alternatively, in order to learn more about the films of a director completely, one must study them in respect to one another to be able to distinguish the similarities and differences they have and apply it to the creative structure of the director. Thus, it does not matter how established a director is in directing, but rather how he executes the film and relays specific and striking qualities onto the screen. For instance, in the films of Hitchcock, the recurring themes that are, the transference of guilt from one individual to another, the fascination with a guilty woman, and suspense, the most
36194537 How do texts composed in ‘Worlds of Upheaval’ emulate their sociopolitical contexts to showcase the aspirations and motivations of individuals? Texts composed in ‘Worlds of Upheaval’ emerge in direct dialogue with their zeitgeists, significantly showcasing the aspirations and motivations of individuals and society. Where the complexity of individual and collective lives in times of socio-political upheaval activates change in the attitudes and perspectives of readers. This is exemplified through Franz Kafka’s 1914 absurdist novel, The Trial as a way of reflecting his Austro-Hungarian context which was under the power of the corrupt Soviet Union.

Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” “The Catcher in the Rye” is a novel written by J.D. Salinger in 1951. The book is one of the most controversial books ever written and its popularity comes from the author’s rough attitude towards society from the perspective of a teenager. “The Catcher in the Rye” is thought to be J.D. Salinger’s masterpiece and it is listed as one of the best novels of the 20th century. In 2009 Finlo Rohrer affirmed that even 58 years later after the book has been published it is still considerate “the defining work on what it is like to be a teenager”. One aspect of class that carried on further into our readings that truly appealed to me was the philosophical and concrete explanation of a mask and its purposes, in the graphic novel, V for Vendetta by Alan Moore. Within the graphic novel we get insight into V’s purpose he hold of wearing the mask, which is to hide his identity and strengthen the idea that anyone can be behind the mask. V reiterates this theory by saying, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.” With this said, he want the idea of the mask to be an idea, and idea with the face for the battle against corruption and the injustices facing the government.
My theme for The Outsiders is “What's on the outside isn't the same on the inside”. I have three quotes to help support this theme. Towards the end of this book Ponyboy actually realizes that everyone is the same on the inside and the outside is just a book cover not literally but figuratively speaking. On page 35 Cherry and Ponyboy are talking and Cherry says, “‘Things are rough all over’” (Hinton 35).
Throughout time, people have been using their imagination as a way of refuge, where they can run away from the problems that come with being in the real world. This issue is well developed throughout the short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, written by James Thurber. The short story follows a middle aged man, Walter Mitty, as he goes through fantasies which involve him in situation that are far from his reality. People use imagination to put themselves in situation where they posses certain qualities or a lifestyle which they lack in the real world. Throughout the short story, Walter escapes into event-triggered fantasies in which he can do or be anything he wants to be.
The Godfather (1972) is said to be one of the greatest films ever made. When this movie was released in 1972, it was nominated for Ten Academy Awards and it won three: Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was adapted from the book with the same name written by award winning author of mafia fiction, Mario Puzo. This film takes place in a span of ten years following the life of Don Corleone, the head of the Corleone Crime Family. It was a film that changed the history of cinema, introducing a very talented filmmaker and several acting legends in the telling of a story of a Sicilian Crime Family.
