A key part of “change” is something called “resilience.” The concept of resilience is described in “Thank you Ma'am” by Langston Hughes and is also exemplified in “Retrieved Reformation” by O. Henry.
In the personal essay “Thank You,” Alex Haley discusses life as a young U.S. coast-guardsman around the Thanksgiving holiday. She has a very complicated personality because she is hostile, but still lonely and caring. A big indication that Mrs. Jone hostile is, after, a boy made an attempt to steal her purse and failed, he fell.

In the story “ Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, Roger, a teenage boy that lurks on the streets makes an unsuccessful attempt at snatching Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’ purse. Mrs. Jones catches him and brings him to her house and provides him with food, water, and money to buy new shoes and sends him off into the night. The reason why Mrs. Jones brought Roger to house is because she wants to teach him a lesson so that he will lead an honest life and will never steal from someone again. Mrs. Jones wants Roger to benefit from the lesson she taught him so she says “ But I wish you would behave yourself, son, from here on in.” (p. 11 lines 156-157).

Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
