“Thank You Ma’am” is a short story by Langston Hughes. This short story is about a boy named Roger getting a second chance in life by Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones. One really late night Roger tried to steal Mrs.Jones’s purse but instead Mrs.Jones. Teaches him a lesson and gives him a second chance so he can turn his life around and not to steal again. Roger can change but the events with Mrs.Jones might not have impacted him enough for him to change or stop stealing. To begin with I think that Roger will stop stealing and help others due to the events with Mrs.Jones. The story states, “Now here take ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.And next time,do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocket book nor nobody else's-because shoes like that come by devilish like that will burn your feet. I got to get my rest now. But I wish you would behave yourself,son,from here on in.” (Hughes 3) I chose this quote because Mrs.Jones tells Roger that she hopes that he will not steal again and that if he needs something he

Again I think Roger will stop stealing and change for the better and help people like him. The author states “The boy wanted to say something else than “Thank You ma’am” to Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones,but he couldn't do so as he turned at the barren stoop and looked back at the large woman in the door. He barely managed to say “Thank You Ma’am” before she shut the door. And he never saw her again.”(Hughes 3) I chose this quote because Roger felt sorry for what he did that he barely managed to say thank you. And the evidence says that he never saw her again so he must have not gotten in trouble
