S.E. Hinton’s book, That Was Then, This Is Now, tells of two boys named Bryon and Mark. Mark has always caused trouble in someway, even with the right motives. Is Mark a tragic character? Was he doomed from the beginning? These are some question that needs to be asked about Mark. He was different from everyone else; anybody could see that reading this book. Mark could be a tragic character. I think Mark was a tragic character. He has always had the mindset that it was okay to do whatever he wanted. He couldn’t see right from wrong like most people. He didn’t see anything wrong with the things he did. He had stolen things and hot wired cars, taking them for joy rides since he was a young boy. He has always had a way of getting out of things. He could easily manipulate people. He has had a tough life since he was young. He had witnessed his parents shoot each other in a drunken argument when he was nine (Hinton 12). He moved in with Bryon and his mother soon after. He told Bryon he would’ve killed them himself if he could’ve done so. He hasn’t every changed. His mindset is still the same as it was when he was young. Nobody could change the way he thought or did things. Not even Bryon could change him. Mark never seen anything he did as something wrong. He always had to get people back if they did something wrong to him or Bryon. He doesn’t think twice about anything; he just does what comes to mind. His never felt guilty or sorry for anything he did. He cut off Angela’s hair to get back at her for trying to hurt Bryon. He didn’t like Cathy cause she told him how to live his life. He does what he wants to do he doesn’t care if somebody doesn’t like it. He sees it as that person’s own problem not his.
