Family: You Never Know What You Have Until it is Gone Throughout the memoir “A Long Way Gone”, Ishmael told how he lost his family in war, through this experience he realized that his family is crucial to his happiness and well being, he also learned that he could form other family bonds with different people. “I wanted to see my family, even if it meant dying with them” (Beah 109). The definition of a family is not limited to blood relation, other loved ones can be family as well.

A Hope in the Unseen written by Ron Suskind is a novel about an underprivileged kid named Cedric, that wants the American dream, to go to college. Cedric really wants to get into MIT, but poor Cedric keeps getting shut down by mostly everybody about him not being ¨MIT material¨. Cedric’s high school failed to provide him an excellent education by shutting down his dreams into getting the college he desires to attend, the low self esteem he has, no longer wants to attend MIT, and being scared for being known for his intelligence. Dissatisfaction with ones present life can lead them to do almost anything. Langston Hughes short story, “Why, You Reckon” captures a naïve main character whom learns the hard way of trusting another personage, solely for the fact that they share a common dilemma. Hughes makes it apparent from the very beginning, that both the narrator and minor character share a common situation. This plays as a detrimental part as to how the short story plays out. Ultimately, Hughes “Why, You Reckon” represents that in the end everyone has their own motive, even if they say otherwise.
Desire is the need for an object, a feeling or a person. One can have a desire for something that is essential for survival, such as water or food, but desire could be used to harm others or oneself. Through A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael’s perspective of desire was altered dramatically. These desires were changed from his surroundings or events that were taking place. “Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei.
