Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a dystopian novel that features a rich tapestry of archetypes. Three of these archetypes - the call to adventure, the outlaw, and the tragic lover - are particularly prominent in the novel. The call to adventure archetype is evident in Darrow, the main protagonist, who is called to undertake a dangerous mission to overthrow the oppressive regime that rules over his people. The outlaw archetype is embodied by Darrow's mentor, Sevro, who flouts the rules and becomes an outlaw to help Darrow achieve his mission. Finally, the tragic lover archetype is represented by Eo, Darrow's wife, who tragically sacrifices herself for the cause.
Few historical figures can stand alongside legends such as Napoleon and Alexander the Great but in his book, Heavenly Khan, Victor Cunrui Xiong Ph.D. tries to make a case for Tang Emperor Taizong, Li Shimin. Xiong attempts to write a historical fiction that appeals to a wide variety of readers. Heavenly Khan tells the story of Emperor Taizong who grew up in a period of devastation for the Chinese people. Taizong would grow to become a military commander, military genius, and emperor of the Tang Dynasty Doctor Xiong is a professor of History at Western Michigan University and is well versed in Asian history.
1. The situational archetype of “Rebirth” relates very well to the novel Fifth Business. Throughout the entire novel, the protagonist, Dunny, considers the part of his life after he served time in the war to be his second life. During the war, he was badly injured from a bomb which resulted in him entering a coma. Nobody thought that he would survive it, but he did wake up some time later.
Neal Shusterman published Unwind on the date of November 6, 2007. Unwind is a dystopian/science fiction novel based over a very controlling, gruesome society after a war - known as the Second Civil War or the Heartland War - somewhere in the near future. The society turned out this way because there was to be no more abortions or giving up children. Now that there is no more of this, people found ways around the rules, such as “storking” (leaving baby on someone’s doorstep). If caught “storking” a baby, the parent must keep the baby.
Death is Usually considered a bad thing to be lurking around your daily life but in these instances it is just another common thing that occurs daily. In Legend by Marie Lu, a girl is stealing and selling of stuff to try to earn enough money to buy the cure for the disease that her brother has. In Scythe by Neal Shusterman, The main characters have been selected to be trained as Scythes who are basically people who run around killing people because they were randomly chosen. The dystopian novels Legend and Scythe both share the similarity that they use the Hero Archetype for the main characters and use Dystopian controls, to establish the common theme that First, Marie Lu uses the characters mood and actions to help develop the theme. In particular, the call to adventure, tragic lover, and mentor archetypes illustrate how fear can blind people when facing hard decisions, causing them to act out of character and break the rules.
The last and third character will be Marty (The Fool). This character archetype can also be “The Stoner”. He falls on both archetypes. The movie recognized him as a fool or stupid, but he really is not. In the film, he is easily recognized as “The Fool” based on his messy, sloppy dirty look and some of the non-sense stuff he talks about.
