The culture in Northern America during the 1960’s and 1970’s was very controversial. There were several that were happy with it but several that were extremely unhappy with it. There were several causes for the protests that took place in the United States during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Allen Ginsberg was a prominent figure during the time of counterculture. Ginsberg lived from 1926-1997 and he was a very key individual in all these protests.
I can assume a common person in the 1960 would find information in a library. I think information literacy was despite the fact they did not have the technology like we have now days, it was something people would still have to learn to get accurate information. Newspapers, phone books, radio, library with tons of books and encyclopedias were also part of that era that started the necessity for inventors to create what we have today. Information literacy then and now I think it was the same practice just with the different tools.
Oppositional stance against policies or institutions is prominent just as it was with youth counterculture

Others just “dropped out” and separated themselves from the mainstream culture through their appearance and lifestyle. Women began to protest about the traditional roles of housewife roles that society had put on them and viewpoints toward sexuality appeared to loosen as they protested. Members of the counterculture were usually known as hippies, shared some beliefs about materialism, technology, and war with the New Left Movement. Hippies would protest against wars such as the Vietnamese War, or they would choose to protest against society by completely leaving it. Many would drop out of school or college to create their idealistic community of peace, love, and harmony.
With every new generation of teenagers or young adults, there always seems to be this negative look towards the youth culture. What really strikes me is that it happens with every new generation. It seems like once a person hits their teenage years they suddenly become “rebels” of society, and for what reason? How do most adults see the younger generation? They are young people who have bad manners, no respect for the elderly, they are real tyrants, they do not stand up when elders walk in, they do not listen to their parents or teachers, they talk in the presence of adults, and they eat gluttonously (Socrates).
Within any society there may be different cultures as well as subcultures. The components of cultures and subcultures are symbols, language, values and norms. Small societies tend be culturally uniform in comparison to large societies tend to contain numerous subcultures. A subculture is a group within a larger culture, that has norms, beliefs, values, and behavioral patterns that are distinguishable from the larger society. Examples of a subculture include bikers, skaters, hackers, gamers, etc.
However, in the society of the 1960’s, many people were oppressed and therefore could not live life how they wanted”(Falcon). This shows how more people are accepted today because it states how people were oppressed during the 60’s and are now able to express themselves more freely. Today, many teens are encouraged to have their own fashion sense and to be unique. In the 60’s, many teens and young adults were discriminated against for how they choose to dress.
Studying psychology has been for me an awakening due to the acquirement of much knowledge. Gaining this knowledge has helped me to refrain from making judgments lightly, but mostly to see human behavior from other perspective including criminal behavior. Instead of examining my life, I have decided to take a more challenging task by reflecting and examining the life of one of US history most notorious criminals: Theodore John Kaczynski (Ted Kaczynski) aka “The Unabomber”. From 1978 to 1996, Kaczynski spread terror throughout the country.
Introduction Culture and Subculture Culture is a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. (Tylor, 1871) Subculture is a different, or even opposes, the mainstream culture in society in terms of norms and values. It is formed by people sharing similar background. These people usually form their own norms, values, attitudes, and lifestyle.
In each society, there are sub-groups and within the groups, each member has their own values, norms, and beliefs. Groups are defined as having at least two individuals sharing the feeling of one of the same and are
Subcultures are values and norms different from those of the majority and are held by a group within a wider society, these social groups are organized around shared interests and practices. A subculture is usually attached to clothes music and other visible fronts within the given community, that is part of the general society. Subcultures contain individuals who think alike who feel like they are not a part of the bigger culture of society and then create a sense of identity for themselves. The term Hip Hop is used as a subcultural movement. Scholars such as Carl and Virgil Taylor emphasize “Hip-Hop is not only a genre of music, but also a complex system of ideas, values and concepts that reflect newly emerging and ever-changing creative correlative expressive mechanisms including but not limited to song, poetry, film and fashion.”
Subculture is significant factor of urban setting. It related to urban culture, or rural culture, or the culture within middle class. The concept of the subculture means sub-division of a regional culture, subculture is combination of social situation between difference classes, personal background, religion and metropolitan, but its combination manner will impact on the participating individual. Green had make the clear point about ‘highly organized subcultures’ with the question: ‘since in the new generation no individual participates in exact cultural complex totally but fundamentally in series of residence groups according to sex, age class, carrier, nation, religion and race all somewhat differing norms and prospect of behavior –how do they organize in many difference ways to build varying background for individual reason of psychoneurotic trends?’ [Green 1946: 354]
