They all share a love for heavy metal music, but they coexist within the larger society. A counterculture is a subculture that dismisses the larger group’s values and norms. Unlike subcultures, they do not coexist peacefully within the larger group or society. A popular example of a counterculture is the hippie movement in the 1960s.
