Have you ever day-dreamed about how you would fare in a survival situation? For the passengers of the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster, this was a cruel and grueling reality. The people of the Andes Flight Disaster were forced to resort to wretched survival tactics, else they die of starvation. In the story “The 1972 Andes Flight Disaster” the author constructs the central idea that conveys how the survivors lived through their intense determination and persistence. “The survivors of the crash had found a small transistor radio on the plane and Roy Harley, one of the survivors, first heard the news that the search was canceled on their 11th day on the mountain.” By the eleventh day their resources aside from water due to their ingenuity of melting snow, had been utterly and inexorably drained, and now they faced the true desperation of abandonment. Now that they had no one searching, it surely would have destroyed most people’s determination, however, due to one soul giving a thoughtful speech, they had hope. These survivors had faced hardships from mortal wounds to abandonment, yet they still persisted, showing their tenacity. These survivors persisted through freezing temperatures, wounds, broken bones, and even death, this allowed them to eventually build enough strength to make their final stand. ““Because it means,” Nicolich said, “that we’re going to get out of here on our own.” The courage of this one man prevented a barrage of total despair.”” Nicolich’s words filled them with determination, this allowed them to create a concrete plan for the survival of the remaining
