Assignment 1 In the excerpt, “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay” by Marie Foley, it reveals how the Five-Paragraph Essay formula as an unnatural method of writing. Foley shows that this formula is used by teachers as a strategy for survival, since it would be easier to teach a class the formula of five-paragraph than to teach the students individually. Also that this formula was originally was planned to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. It’s a useful step for beginning student to write and to overcome writer’s block.
Barry Alford, the author of Freirean Voices, Student Choices is an English professor at Mid Michigan Community College. In this specific piece of writing, he states that “particularly when they find themselves following some formula organizing the topic instead of the trail of their own thinking” (P. 280). Meaning that students just do exactly what they are told to do instead of venturing out and making it their own writing. Alford talks about how students need to have more in depth and creative forms of writing rather than being boring. A major thing he believes is that students need to hear themselves and their other classmates before they start writing.
Naomi Baron, a linguistics professor at American University, believes that texting is harming students writing. She states, “So much of American society has become sloppy and laissez faire about the mechanics of writing” (131). The author used this quote to drawl in the teachers who believe texting is harming students writing. Cullington goal is to make them continue reading and learn how she believes texting is actually beneficial. By putting the opposing view point of texting affecting writing in the beginning, is confusing to the target audience.
TKM Theme Essay Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place during the Great Depression in the small town of Maycomb in Alabama. Scout and Jem live in what they think is a good community. From what they know, everyone fits into the community except Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor. They think this until the trial of Tom Robinson, an African American that is accused a raping a white women, takes place. The kids see something they have never noticed about their community before.
Summary In chapter three “In the defense of a Liberal Education” author Fareed Zakaria opens up what he believes to be “central virtue of liberal education”(72). He writes that it teaches one how to think critically and clearly. He explains that thinking is the stronger advantage one could have in writing well. Before writing it helps first people to think in a critical sense so work should be using simple language in a well comprehendible way.
In The Taker by J. M. Steele, Carly Biels is a teenager who has a dream to ace the SAT without help of the Taker. The Taker is an anonymous person who goes from person to person, asking them if they want him to take the SAT for them. All she wants in life is for her family and boyfriend, Brad, to be happy for her. All she needs to do is bomb the high school SAT. However when she gets her scores back from the practice SAT, she realizes she needs to up her game.
It showed that students do not believe textspeak is appropriate in formal writing assignments. They recognize the difference between texting friends and writing formally and know what is appropriate in each situation. This was proven true in the student samples, in which no examples of textspeak were used" (Cullington 367). In order words, Cullington's research showed that there is little effect on writing ability from texting. She collected sample essays and found no evidence of textspeak.
The Compound The theme of the Compound is cooperation. One time working together is important was when Eli and his family had to survive in the compound for 15 years thanks to the dad. Another evidence that working together is important is when Eli and the older sister tries to escape the compound. The last reason why working together is important is getting along with his sisters and brother. This is an example of how they have to work together because Eli used to only hang around his brother Eddie.
Allowing children to learn to think critically helps them to solve problems and have a logical argument about something they believe is true. Applying critical thinking into schools gives a child a chance to make a difference. Also, Elizabeth McKinstry agrees with Hummell in challenging the next generation to think for themselves. McKinstry writes about how Common Core education helps children become more interactive in the world and teaches them how to apply the knowledge they have learned in life. McKinstry said, "Their reality is not connected to a world outside the boundaries in which they live" (McKinstry 20).
This grants more creative freedom for the writer, while also instilling the different template methods through practice. In spite of the logical advantages that the templates give the writer, some people are still skeptical of this type of method. Many believe that these templates are a juvenile form that inhabits creativity. One student even proclaims, “I’m in college now, this is third-grade-level stuff.” (10) Regardless of these students claims that templates are too simplistic and less imaginative, Graff and Birkensteins’ idea that one must learn through template forms in order to enhance their skills in the future should be endorsed.

Critical thinking involves skillfully analyzing and assessing thoughts, using abstract ideas to interpret thoughts effectively, and coming to well reasoned conclusions. Peter Elbow’s proposal is different than what we ordinarily call critical thinking because the doubting game is “seeing” while critical thinking is “looking for.” When people think critically, they question others, they want to see all evidence involved that supports their argument, and they want to answer all questions involving their side of the argument. Critical thinkers tend to stay on the side of an argument that seems more logical or that makes the most sense to them without trying to believe the side that seems illogical. They look for the flaws in the other argument rather than looking at their own through the eyes of the individual with the opposing idea.
She thinks that “we’re in the midst of a literacy revolution” (Thompson 157), which may well be true. But she only identifies and investigates one cause based solely on her inductive process. Lunsford believes that students are better writers because they type more (Thompson 158). This idea is a classic case of the post hoc fallacy, or mistaking correlation for causation (Moore 207). King has provided his opinion about education is building character. Dr. King uses his words to create an audience awareness to think for yourself isn’t the same as you may call it critical thinking. Against the common assumption that colleges should teach their students “critical reasoning,” Dr. King argues that critical thinking alone is insufficient and even dangerous. Teaching one to think critically is no small task. Most students learn by constructing knowledge based on an engaged learning process rather than by absorbing knowledge from passive sources.
