Abortion is a big issue and many until this day debate whether it should be legal or not. Many people are against teenagers having abortions or abortion in general. I do not disagree with abortion in certain cases such as rape. But, I do disagree that abortions are so common. Three reasons I disagree with abortions are because they can be dangerous, they are very common, and I think it is an epidemic and teenagers should be responsible enough if they are sexually active. Before abortions became legal “past generations regarded teen pregnancy as something deeply shameful and they were sent by their family to a home for unwed mothers.” (Lowen, 3) When a teenage girl became pregnant their pregnancy was kept a secret and their family members told friends they were staying with a relative. Teen pregnancy was seen as something disgraceful. “Abortion was legalized is 1972, when Roe v. Wade allowed safe and legal medical means to become available to most of the population.” (Lowen, 3) Once abortions became legal many teenage girls were able to secretly have an abortion. This made it easier for them to hide it from their parents, relatives, and friends. Many times teens were afraid to tell their parents they were pregnant and looked for other ways to end their pregnancies. “They attempted self-induced abortions with herbs or toxic substances or sharp implements and others sought illegal back alley abortionists.” (Lowen, 3) This was extremely dangerous and as a result many of them …show more content…

If they feel ready to be sexually active they should be ready and educated. “Sex is no longer a taboo and as more adolescents become sexually active, the number of incidences increases, and the number is unusually high in the United States.” (Masthoff, 2) If, sex is no longer a taboo and teenagers are becoming sexually active, before becoming sexually active they should be aware of risks such as STD’s, and pregnancy that can lead to abortion. Teenagers should know there are many methods of contraceptives that are available in the U.S and they should have health classes that show them possible consequences if they are sexually active and possible consequences that can lead them to becoming pregnant. “The Guttmacher Institute reports that in 2006, there were 200,420
