Into thin air is a book where you learn about the inside of an expedition that to outsiders may seem as easy. The struggles that the main character faces scar him for the rest of his life, which lead him to write the book to answer questions that he or other people might have had with the expedition that took place. This character shows strength to overcome the obstacles that are put in his path. At first in the beginning of the book Jon Krakauer starts off by being just another climber that is going on an expedition to Mount Everest, but as the book advances you can tell that Krakauer at the beginning wasn’t mentally prepared for what was going to happen in that expedition and didn’t expect the outcome of it. In July 28, 1914 to November 11,1918 World War 1 took place where over 17 million lives were lost and over 20 million wounded soldiers. This war was between Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States against Germany, and Austria-Hungary. The main cause of World War 1 was militarism where many European countries kept increasing their size of their army and navy without a war going on. The conditions set for a major shift in power caused by Italian and German unification. This unification brought many new leaders of great power such as Victor Emmanuel II and Otto Von Bismarck. With newfound land, power, and wealth, Bismarck felt invincible and began to seek war and form alliances.
World War 1 began on until July 28, 1914. After, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife Sophie was assassinated. They were assassinated by Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. After the assassination, Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government for the attack and hoped to use it as a justification for settling the question of the Serbian nationalism. Days after the assassination, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

After having studied them all, I have narrowed it down to Militarism and Imperialism, but I believe that the main cause was Alliances. Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia, and the alliance system started to go in effect . Russia, Serbia’s ally, starts to mobilize to the Russian-Austrian border, and the German border (because Germany was Austria’s ally).
