The Era of Enlightenment was a cultural movement in Europe that favored reason in place of belief. It challenged the accepted views of the time which, in turn, endangered the power of absolute rulers and their system of government. This era influenced a majority of the European population, however, the monarchs of the time did not exemplify those same ideals. Catherine II of Russia’s views on serfs and peasants are a great example of a ruler defying the enlightenment movement. In her “Decree on Serfs” she states that “serfs and peasants...owe their landlords proper submission and absolute obedience in all matters” , essentially saying that serfs of the time should be completely obedient to their masters (Doc. 6).

There are many beloved styles and artists from this era. The famous styles and artists introduced in this era lead up to our own modern music and composers.

The Enlightenment Period consisted of philosophers that advocated for political, social, and economic changes. The enlightenment thinkers motivated the revolutions of the 18 and 19th century by promoting Equal rights of Man and by preaching that governments should be managed by branches instead of a monarch. One of the most influential revolutions was the American revolution whereas the American colonists were fed up with the British and declared independence from them.
Enlightenment, the philosophical European movement of the 16 and 1700s, changed the way revolutions operated globally and enduringly. This “Age of Reason” propelled revolutionary crusades with intellectual ideals that favored individualism over religion. Both the American and French Revolutions sought self-determination and the expansion of political rights, and were aided by the words of the Era’s notability. In the late 1700s, America began to take steps toward becoming the United States.
The American Revolution was between the Americans and England’s King, and the French Revolution was between the French’s king ad the third estate. The Declaration of Independence was created, because the Americans thought that all men should have the same rights and the King of England has done the opposite of what they wanted. The Declaration of the Rights of Man was created, because the French third estate wasn’t being treated like the 1st and 2nd estate and they wanted have rights that was justified. These Revolutions started from Enlightenment ideas. Enlightenment ideas were ideas that would help with individualism.
The Enlightenment was a movement focused on equality, freedom of speech, press, and religion. The movement helped shape the philosophical basis of the American Revolution and was crucial in determining the politics, religion, and government of colonial America. All aspects of life were affected by the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment popularized self- improvement and societal change. Many figureheads and philosophers such as Thomas Jefferson and John Locke helped shape these ideas.
The American Revolution and the French Revolution were both products of the Enlightenment ideals. These ideals emphasized on natural rights and equality. Both revolutions had their similarities and differences. American Revolution was similar to the French Revolution because people started to grow dissent to the monarchy and the upper classes and because of this, the economy for each nation started to weaken. These people felt the need to revolt so that they can be free against the oppressive rule of the absolute monarchs.
The Enlightenment began with the English philosopher John Locke. It was an era of spreading faith in reason, in reason, and in universal rights and laws (The Enlightenment in Europe). The ideas that were embodied by Enlightenment were life, liberty, and property. It also led to the idea of natural right. The Enlightenment influenced the way people finally realized that divine right wasn’t right and start to doubt it.
The Enlightenment was a period of time that stressed the importance of reason and individual ideas. Many philosophers published works criticizing a country’s monarch or divulging the flaws they saw in a system within the government, such as the justice system. The Enlightenment also stressed the importance of education, and as a result of this, literacy rates experienced a major upward trend. Now able to read the philosopher’s works, a larger sum of people now were educated on the corruptions within their government. This caused a questioning of traditional practices, and people began to believe they could revise their government.
Washington Rules emphasizes that the United States should order world politics. The world must be ordered by the United States and cannot be permitted to order itself. As a result of Washington rules, the United States has a duty and moral obligation to be the world’s policeman to the point where other nations just naturally expect us to act. The Washington Rules project of US foreign policy has managed to sustain and regenerate itself since the end of World War Two. However, we often forget that by following Washington rules, we do not follow limits and extend our power.
In the English colonies in North America, they experienced a time of church reform which provided a tie with the new Church of England. This created many political communities based off of a British outline and way of life. Other ties led to the beginning of evangelical protestantism in the North American colonies. Also, the emergence of “The Enlightenment” caused many american colonists to diversify and expand their religion, some even followed art.
The Enlightenment and Imperialism completely revolutionized how people look at the world and what they think of it. These two major events also help to bring to light to determine how free the world is today in terms of suppressed rights and liberties in assorted countries. The cycle of securing individual freedoms has been heavily impacted by the Enlightenment, Imperialization and the drafting of the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. The Scientific Revolution is what lead the people into a new way of life, a life where they were valued as well as their ideas in society and in government.
At the end of the 18th century, Shelley, her family, and the rest of Europe watched as French peasants, tired of social inequality, broke into the royal prison, the Bastille, in a sign of defiance against King Louis XVI. Shortly afterwards, this rebellion turned into a revolution, King Louis XVI and his wife were imprisoned and later executed, and the French monarchy collapsed (Marcuse). In conclusion, the Enlightenment was vital to the American Revolution and the creation of American Government. The Enlightenment beliefs that influenced the American Revolution were natural rights, the social contract, and the right to overthrow the government if the social contract was violated. The Enlightenment beliefs that aided to the creation of the American government were separation of powers, checks and balances, and limited government. As stated before, without the Enlightenment there would not have been a revolution, resulting in no American Government. The Enlightenment’s influence on the creation of America is irrefutable.
In the eighteenth century a new period of change swept across Europe because of previous intellectual developments as well as some very strong and independent people who stood up against common belief. The Enlightenment of the eighteenth century was like nothing that had ever occurred in Europe, shortly after the Scientific Revolution, this period was classified as a period where intellectuals “dared to know”. Even though the effects of this period mostly affected the elite few that were able to read, the effects would affect everyone.
