News Skews Whether it be fancy news stations like NBC, or local stations like Keloland and KSFY, they all exist to do one job. This job is to inform the viewer on the news and what is going on in society today. There are multiple ways to inform a viewer, which can be good and bad. Everybody likes to believe what they are being told is the truth and are being updated with the most current news. Though, news and gossip sometimes fall hand in hand, depending on who is telling the story and how. When looking at the television, viewers believe that they are simply watching the news. According to Neil Postman who in his essay, "The Age of Show Business", the phrase 'watching the news' brings a whole new meaning. He describes the art of American …show more content…

The information viewers are receiving is a shuffle between what they want to see and what they need to see. According to Kiku Adatto, the news culture is constantly stuck between trying to find a medium for fitting into the culture of what the public wants to see and the information that should be released. It is not the news culture's goal to misinform viewers but they do fail to give straight-forward information. Further into Adatto's essay, "The Incredible Shrinking Sound Bite", it is easier to see the way the news culture has shifted from a reliable source to a carefully planned performance. If news shows did not adjust to popular culture, nobody would watch it or feel the need to rely on it. Society wants constant updates and to feel that every important topic is being told. With the multiple cultures and variety of stories, it is hard for news stations in America like CNN to decide which story is important and which stories are going to attract viewers (421). In one of the final segments of this episode of CNN Newsroom, viewers are presented with a possibly great story, but it fails to educate them on the topic. The potential of the story, "Changing the Workplace", was high; the story could have discussed ideas and ways workers can benefit from their working environment and how to improve their job life. This story starts with the famous, Dan Price, C.E.O. of GravityPayments.com, discussing the way he has changed his company for the benefit of his workers. He begins discussing how he has raised the minimum wage in his company and how it was very easy to do so. But when he starts to recommend to the viewers to "demand a raise", anchorwoman Poppy Harlow interrupts him with a more personal question, "Would you do it again?", with a hint of mild sarcasm. This takes, not only Dan Price away from his current point, but takes the viewer away from his idea as well. Was
