The Albatross. A plane like no other, with every detail incorporated to achieve the most aerodynamic and powerful plane. With two machine guns firing through the propeller, it was the undisputed ruler of the skies. From the beginning of World War One, it was clear that this war would be unlike any other before it. There was debate over what role the newly invented airplane would play. Many didn't see a reason to change how war had been fought before. But soon airplanes were mapping enemy trenches from above. This information was invaluable, but both sides wanted more. The allies and the central powers wanted to make the newly invented airplane into a fighter. Both sides were having trouble coming up with a way to shoot a machine gun from the plane. The only way to do this would be to mount a machine gun on the plane. The most effective way would be to have a machine gun mounted to the front of the plane, so they could aim the plane at …show more content…

It was made of steam bent wood glue into bigger pieces, covered with linen that was printed in a colorful pattern. This pattern turned out to be a great camouflage and it required little maintenance. It had two machine guns, which gave it twice the firepower of any other plane. The Albatrosses would fights in groups and target enemy planes like a pack. (Green, 2014) At the time, the pusher was the best British plane, but was no match for the German planes. The Albatross would fly above the clouds and dive down on a British plane and shoot it down. The FE.2B had the propeller behind the cockpit. This meant that the fuselage had to be designed differently and the tail section was supported by twin booms attached to the fuselage by wires. (Green, 2014) This created more drag, making the plane slower and less maneuverable than the Albatross. With these planes there was no need for the timing mechanism and the machine gun could fire
