India supplemental Book: The almond tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti Paragraph 1: S.O.A.P.S. The writer of this book is a women by the name of Michelle Cohen Corasanti. She grew up in a jewish home, and spent her life in a quiet way, then she graduated from harvard and wrote this book. This book as she says holds fictional characters but “It has a sound and accurate base in reality”. This book takes place from the 1950’s to the 2010’s about a palestinian boy by the name of Ahmed Hamid. While her friends shopped she read a book called “The Kite Runner” which brought up her past and inspired her to write about her past. His father is falsely accused, beaten, and arrested leading to their family losing everything and turning to hatred. The Almond tree shows Hamid’s (the main character--fictional) childhood as he breaks free from the chains of trauma, of violence, and humiliation. Although everything is taken away from him; his home, his family, and his rights, he faces his own problem-- His own talent. He is one of few to be blessed with such a smart and intelligent mind. He is told by his people to hate the enemy and yet he can't fathom the fact of moving on without letting his talent overcome this hatred. Hamid struggles and barely survives. The reason for his survival lies in those who have been called the enemy. His so called journey to avenge his family turns into a journey to figure out peace in the conflict that he has experienced. On the other side of the story it showcases his brother and his hatred for the enemy. It shows the path that two brothers took to create a new future. This book does a good job of personalizing characters and causing you to get attached to them. This brings in a new perspective of how we feel when we read about the conflict that these brothers have to
