The American Dream was created to give everyone equal opportunity, and it encouraged people to believe in the freedom that they should so rightfully receive. Since then Americans have had the goal of living a happy and comfortable life (Hartmann). The American Dream is one of the main things that bring people from all over into our country. People come from all over because they believe America is a place for change, but with so many new people coming Americans have been affected. Americans must relearn to work hard in order to achieve the dreams they have set in order to keep the American Dream alive. “Most believe today’s kids will have a poorer chance of holding a steady job and owning a home without too much debt, and that their children will have less opportunity to achieve a comfortable retirement,” (Kadlec). If our jobs continue to leave our country this will only make things worse. The people of today’s generation need to gain the want to create opportunity just as the people coming into our country still have. Many American’s seem to be blind to the fact that we are losing more jobs and going even more in debt then we have before. We also tend to take advantage of the many great things that America still has to offer, and by doing so we are hurting ourselves. We need to learn that just settling for retiring comfortably is not acceptable, and we need to start reaching for our full potential rather than being lazy and ungrateful. Immigrants see the things America has to offer that many Americans tend to take advantage of. In an Article written by the North Carolina Public Radio, a man named Manolo Betancur spoke of his experience with the American dream. Manolo stated that “I came to his country just with two pants, two shirts, my pair of shoes and $100 in my pocket, and I didn't even speak any English.” Even though it wasn’t necessarily easy he was able to get a college degree and become an American citizen. After getting a degree him and his wife were able to open a very successful bakery. This proves that people who come to our country somes have more motivation for a better life than many Americans do. Manolo stated that “..the American dream is still there.
