Dreams What are dreams? Are they thoughts of something we wish to be, would happen, or just a movie in our heads. I believe all of us dream of something different whether being rich, nightmares of mistakes we made, or being with someone we admire. William Shakespeare dove into this thought in Midsummers Night’s Dream by giving us his vision of what a dream was about through different characters throughout his play. We’ll take a look at some of the characters and what they might have or dreamt about. We’ll start off with one that I believed has a conscious dream but it probably will never happen, Egeus and his daughter Hermia. With his everlasting disappointment, he goes off and falls asleep himself (Act 3, Scene 1, 82-87). He dreams about falling in love with Helena now (Act 3, Scene 1, 137-144). Helena doesn’t know what to think now. She knows they both really love Hermia so she thinks they all are playing an evil joke on her. They all now dream that they fight with each other over who gets who of sorts. Lysander and Demetrius chase each other through the woods trying to kill each other. Helena and Hermia fight each other because Hermia believes Helena stole Lysander away from her and Helena thinks she is part of the evil joke the other three are playing on her (Act 3, Scene 1, 285-344). In the meantime, Titania wakes up and tells Oberon that she had a horrible dream that she fell in love with an ass. Bottom is still asleep with the ass’ head on and Oberon points him out to Titania. When he finally awakens to find none of his fellow actors are around. He’s amazed about his dream and wants Quince to write about it. He thinks it will make the greatest play for the Duke (Act 4, Scene 1,193-205). He runs and finds he fellow actors and they all wonder where he was all this time. He tells them he had this amazing dream, but he will tell them the story after the play for the Duke is finished (Act 4, Scene 2, 15-28). Finally, the four lovers wake up from the sounds of the huntsmen’s horns. They all realize it was all just a dream. But Demetrius changes and finds that for some reason his love is for Helena and not Hermia. Demetrius still thinks that it may be a dream and he asks Hermia. She said that they are awake for sure.
