In Selena, it is clear that the American dream being represented was that of the Latinos. By showing the contrast between Abraham’s failure as a musician in the early 1960s and Selena’s overwhelming success in the early 1990s the film essentially perpetuates Selena’s image as an emblem of hope to those in search of the American dream. As Selena is a third generation Mexican-American it would make sense that the American dream being represented was that of Mexican-Americans. However, because Selena’s story is told from a U.S. assimilationist perspective the success of Selena is instead associated with Latino’s version of the American dream.
